Midgets take Milverton
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets stormed into
their first round play off series last
week by blowing two wins past
Milverton to take a commanding
2-0 series lead in games.
Blyth hosted game one on Jan. 19
as both teams braved the winter
weather to play. The storm
continued inside the Blyth Arena as
Blyth blasted Milverton 6-0.
After a tentative first frame the
hosts scored the only goals they
would need as they struck for two
quick markers midway through
period two. Tim Lyons sent Ryan
Chamney in for a breakaway goal
to open the scoring six and a half
minutes into the period.
Just over two minutes later
Chamney and Peter Craig assisted
on a short handed goal as Danny
Gibbings took a rebound off the
endboards surprising the Milverton
crease keeper.
The flurries continued in the third
as Blyth put the game away with
four unanswered scores. Brian
McNichol assisted on the third
Blyth goal as Casey Boven drifted
in a screened backhand shot with
Blyth on a power play. McNichol
then upped the count to 4-0 as he
surprised the Milverton defence by
taking a rebound off the boards and
sliding the puck in. Gibbings'
In their second game, Blyth
dropped a 5-2 decision to Belmont.
Blyth goals were scored by Nathan
Loder and Haggitt. Assists went to
Salverda and Wilson.
Blyth needed a victory in their
third game to remain in contention.
The team responded with an
impressive 5-1 win over Osprey
Twp. Blyth goals were scored by
Salverda, three; John Armstrong,
one; and Greg Toll, one. Assists
unassisted goal, with just under six
minutes left in the game, gave
Blyth a 5-0 lead. Two minutes later
Henry Bos completed the scoring
as his long shot from the blueline
hit the goalie and bounced in the,
air, then hit him on the back of the
head before entering the net.
Michael deJong enjoyed the
shutout between the pipes for the
home squad as Blyth took a 1-0
series lead with this whiteout.
Blyth then hit the road on Jan. 20
as they braved the frigid
temperatures and overcame the icy
wind chill factor inside the
Milverton Coliseum with a third
period rally to take a 2-0 series
lead, winning 7-3.
Blyth took a 2-1 first period lead
with Boven, from Chamney and
Jason Heipel, and Chamney, from
Boven and Craig, notching the
Blyth goals.
Lyons upped the lead with the
only second period goal as he was
capably assisted by Boven and
McNichol.
The cold temperatures finally had
an effect on Blyth as Milverton
rebounded to tie the game 3-3 with
two goals in the first four minutes
of the third frame.

went to Ben Craig, two; Haggitt,

The victory moved Blyth to the
Consolation Final against Omemee.
The Omemee team took a 3 - 1 lead
in the third before Blyth tied the
score with two quick goals to force
a sudden death overtime. Omemee
scored at 2:46 of overtime to
capture the championship, with
Blyth finishing as the runnerup.
Rutledge scored twice and Chris
Stewart once in a losing cause.
Blyth will begin their defence of
last year's OMHA Bantam E
Championship when they meet
Zurich in the first round of
playoffs.

Jeff Peters, of the Blyth Tyke
team, deserves great credit for his
innovative coaching methods, that
continually develop his players'
potential.
Each game, Peters reinforces one
specific skill or task, that all the
players should work on as a team,
as well as reminding his team to
maintain the expected degree of
sportsmanship. Assistant coach,
Steve Cook, and manager, Doug
McCIinchey, also support these
principles.
On Saturday, Jan. 22 in a game
against Brussels, Peters knew he
had one of his best goalies in net -
son Justin - so he gambled, and put
all his seasoned, experienced
players on one line and his
younger, learning players on the
other.
Peters seemed pleasantly
surprised, as unexpectantly, his
inexperienced players exposed
some raw talent and exposed some
techniques that they had learned
through the season.
Centre, Luke Anderson, chalked
up a total of four goals, and
forward, Brett Bean tallied for five.
This combination, worked
diligently and discovered how to

Michelle Cook, Cody Anderson

improve their techniques of team
play, and frequently tested
Brussels' goalie Brett Hunt with
their shots and rushes to the net.
Blyth's goalie, Justin Peters,had a
solid performance in net, and
allowed only one goal to squeak
past the line off the stick of Nick
Campbell.
