Ag. Soc. suffers operating loss
For the second year in a row the
Brussels Agricultural Society has
suffered an operating loss.
At the annual banquet and meet
ing in Melville Presbyterian
Church, Brussels, Jan. 19, Treasur
er Melody White told directors that
this year's statement brought with it
a net operating loss of $1,378.49.
This was down slightly from last
year's loss, but $1,647.29 in invest
ments left the Society with an oper
ating profit in 1993 of $241.97
Total income from this year was
up by $3,251.67 to $19,505.41.
Significant items which contributed
to the increase were $10,207.14 in
fundraising receipts, up from
$4,363.59 in 1992. The biggest
portion of this came from the suc-

1992.

expenses. In 1992 $2,108 was spent
on prizes, while this fall because of
the loss of dairy club entries as a
result of Bovine Viral Disease

There were only three days of
school last week at Brussels Public
School because of the wintry,
stormy weather. A lot of students
were glad to have more vacation
time during the week. Primary
students spent these days staying
inside watching T.V. and playing
Nintendo where it was nice and
warm. Some of the braver kids
bundled up, went outside and built
snowmen and forts. Some were
actually helping out by fetching the
mail.
The students in Mrs. Clark’s class
are also enjoying the winter
weather indoors by making
snowmen out of cotton. They also
used yam, construction paper, and
beads.
The grade eight instrumental
band will be playing at Dining Out
For Seniors on Jan. 27. They will
perform a selection of five of their
favourite songs. Their preferred
selection is St. Nick's March.
BPS is holding a Knights of
Columbus Free Throw Competition
on Jan. 28. The students from Mr.
Teal's Grade 5/6, Mr. Wanless'
Grade 6/7, and Mrs. Perrie's Grade
8 class will be participating. Each
contestant will be getting fifteen
throws.
Volleyball playoffs for noon hour
sports have begun. For the Junior
teams White is in first and for the
Intermediate, Red is in first. The
volleyball tournament is being held
at F.E. Madill on January 26. The
teams that are going to the
tournament have not yet been
selected. The two teams are going
to be coached by Mr. Prior and
Mrs. Perrie.
