During an "in camera" session held on Jan 10. by the Huron Coun ty Board of Education, a problem arose concerning the designation of Easter Monday. In early meeting, a decision was made to use Easter Monday as an instructional day and replace it with an unpaid leave day (as set out by the Social Contract) for the teach ers during the March break. This would help extend the mid term break to two full weeks and would allow the school schedule to coincide with that of the Huron- Perth RCSS schedule, thus elimi nating busing problems. The board was informed that, according to the collective agree ments of the SEIU (union custodi ans) and CUPE ( secretaries and teacher assistants), Easter Monday is designated a holiday. Two options were put forth. The first would see the teaching staff working on Easter Monday without the support of secretaries or teacher assistants and without custodial support. The second option would be to designate Easter Monday a holiday and find another way of adjusting the schedule to accommodate unpaid leave days. Negotiations continue and an announcement will be made within two weeks. For the tournament in Clinton, Theresa Oliver is scorekeeper and Courtney Rutledge is equipment manager. The team is entered in two tournaments. On Jan. 22, they will play in the St. Joseph's Invitational Tournament in Clinton. They will also play on Feb. 5 in their regional tournament at Central Huron District High School in Clinton. They made pastel pictures of their favourite parts. On Wednesday they tried some experiments with snow, which lasted all day, surprisingly. They estimated how long it would take an amount of snow to melt, looked at the dirt in snow and looked at both ice and snow under a hand lens. It was very interesting. PETRIFIED FOREST By Maegan Reinhart, Grade 3 The petrified forest is made of trees and logs that fell down in the mud and sand about 225 million years ago. Minerals in the water that soaked into the wood gradually turned into stone. The stone shows the detail of the wood. Through the years many of the logs have become rainbow coloured. There are petrified forests in Arizona. CHESS CLUB Over 70 eager students are participating in the Chess Club which meets on Tuesdays at noon.
