A member of the Blyth Atom Rep team speeds away with the puck as a Brussels player moves in to try and take charge. The two teams met in Brussels Friday and the hosts handed their visitors a big 7-1 victory. Blyth Atom Reps extend streak Blyth Midgets take Hensall 8-4 By Rusty Blades The Blyth Midgets chalked up three more league games last week as they won one and lost two. Blyth travelled to Mitchell on Jan. 10 and were defeated 4-2 by a pesky Mitchell squad. Mitchell notched two first period goals and doubled the score with two, second period power play goals. Blyth finally put one past Mitchell's last line of defence with four and a half minutes left in the game. Danny Gibbings scored the man-advantage goal with linemates Christopher Howson and Tim Cowan earning the well deserved assists. Less than two minutes later Gibbings assisted on Blyth's second goal as Peter Craig ended a coast to coast dash with the red light shining. Mitchell skated out the final two minutes for their 4-2 win. It was a different game in Blyth on Jan. 14 as both Hensall goalies took the night off and let Blyth loose in an 8-4 romp. Henry Bos opened and closed the game scoring with two unassisted efforts, including a 120 foot shorthanded slapper from his own blueline. Jason Heipel had his best offensive game of the year as he chipped in with two goals and added three huge assists. Casey Boven was the third Blyth player to score two goals on the night, while Howson and Michael de Jong rounded out the scoring. Single assists were recorded by Howson, Ben Hakkers, Wilfred Datema and Cowan. The losers played very undisciplined in the dying minutes of the game but the referees kept things in check as Blyth humbled Hensall. Game number three of the week was played against Seaforth in Clinton on Jan. 16. Although this was an away game it seemed like the first home game of the season for some team members. After a scoreless first the teams traded two goals each in the second for a tie. All four goals were scored in a two and a half minute span early in the period. After Seaforth opened the scoring Blyth retaliated with a goal of their own 37 seconds later. Craig sent Howson and Gibbings in on a break and Gibbings blasted a one- timer past the lonely Seaforth goaltender. The goal flurry continued as Seaforth took a 2-1 lead one minute and 20 seconds later but Blyth tied the contest just 43 seconds after Seaforth's go ahead goal. The combo of Craig, Gibbings and Howson teamed up again with Howson snapping one into the top shelf to forge a 2-2 tie. Blyth played a determined third but Seaforth scored the only goal as Underfoot A Blyth Midget tussles with a visiting Hensall player to try and regain control of the puck in this action from Friday night's game. Hensall was sent home down 8-4. The Blyth Atom Rep team picked up three wins this past week to increase their winning streak to six games. On Thursday night Blyth hosted the Wingham team. Blyth came out skating and built a 4-0 lead midway through the second period. Blyth was leading 5-2 with five minutes to go in the game when they ran into penalty problems. The home side took four straight minor penalties to put them in a six skaters to three situation. Wingham notched two power-play goals to close within one goal, but Blyth hung on to win 5-4 in exciting fashion. David Ansley led the Blyth offence with three goals and Tyke’s Anderson oustanding Cody Anderson of the Blyth Tykes did a fantastic job in net when his team met Clinton on their home ice, Saturday, Jan. 15. Cody faced every challenge and made great stops with his body, stick and glove hand. Often it was the second or third rebound that got poked in, and squeaked past Anderson. David Shropshall and Shayne Andrews were the successful goal scorers for Clinton netting six goals between them. Luke Anderson played a great game for Blyth with relentless, persistent rushes and carries into Clinton's zone unfortunately he was unable to get past either Cody Symes or Matthew Dalgliesh who alternated in net for Clinton. Justin Peters played a solid game they notched the winner with just over six minutes left in the game. Although Blyth lost 3-2 they did a complete reversal of their effort against Seaforth only two weeks before. Because of injuries and a lack of commitment, Blyth played with only nine skaters but they proved that strong goaltending and a determined, disciplined effort will provide positive results, even if it doesn't show in the win-loss column. The Midgets have been bumped to the 'C division for their OMHA playoffs. Their first series gets underway tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. against Milverton. two assists. Jeremy Van Amersfoort and Nathan Shannon added single goals and assists went to Matt Anderson, Tyler Stewart and Bryce Toll. Blyth travelled to Brussels Friday night and dominated the home team to a 7-1 win. Matt Anderson scored twice for Blyth and singles went to Shawn Bromley, Joel Arthur, Shannon, Van Amersfoort and Ansley. Picking up assists were Adam Anderson, Drew Corneil, Derek Cook, Ansley, Stewart and Toll. Dean Wilson provided solid goaltending in the Blyth net in both games. Blyth was on the road again on Saturday travelling to Clinton. and again was the backbone for Blyth with frequent key defensive plays and some nice offensive moves that netted him two goals and an assist. Blyth Novices top Clinton Eric Jarrett of the Blyth Novice team, recorded a shutout at Clinton on Saturday, Jan. 15. Blyth opened the scoring with eight seconds remaining in the first period. Robbie Archambault netted an unassisted goal. After a scramble in front of the net, Archambault managed to poke the puck past Clinton's goalminder, Carson Kruse. The game was scoreless in the second period, however there were exciting plays at both ends of the ice, especially by Jarrett who made some outstanding saves for Blyth. 1st Annual Blyth Co-Ed SNO-FEST LOCATION: Blyth Community Centre DATE: Saturday February 12, 1994 EVENTS: Sno-Pitch, Plank Walk, Blind Volleyball, Loonie Walk, Floor Hockey, Tag Football Dance to follow - 9 p.m. -1 a.m. Age of Majority Only Music by "Sound Proof Music Services" FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: Robb: 482-7481 Kevin 523-9556 Entries must be in by Friday, January 28 BLYTH SNO TRAVELLERS Invite you to visit their BRAND NEW CLUBHOUSE on Sat. Blyth again came out skating hard and had built a 4-1 lead towards the end of the second period. However, the Clinton squad never quit, and came back with two goals to close within one goal late in the game. Wilson came up big in the Blyth cage stopping a Clinton breakaway with 12 seconds remaining to preserve the victory. Goal scorers for Blyth were Cook, Stewart, M. Anderson and Arthur. Anderson and Ansley chipped in with assists. The Blyth Atoms have two remaining schedule games before starting playoffs. The Atoms' record now stands at 15 wins, three losses and two ties. Blyth's other goal came from Ryan McClinchey who got a quick goal carried in from the faceoff zone. The third period goals came from Jeff Carter who made a nice play to stop and re-direct Nicholas Courtney's shot into the net. Cole Stewart gave a great performance, similar to a Wayne Gretzky move, by weaving through the opposition and scoring a shorthanded goal. Steven Van Amersfoort, who gave 100 percent throughout the game, was finally rewarded with the fourth and final goal for Blyth, after a nice pass from Kirk Stewart.
