Crusaders win by 2
Brussels Novice player Nolan Krotz, right and a member of the Stephen Twp. team seem
bent on getting this puck during Friday night’s game in Brussels. While Brussels gave it their
best a strong visiting team came out on tip with a 12-3 victory.
Seven third period goals,
including three shorthanded in 32
seconds, gave the Brussels
Crusaders a 12-10 win over the
1980 Intermediate Bulls Saturday
night at the B.M. & G. Community
Centre.
Brian Campbell scored four
while Dean Wheeler and Jeff
McKee each notched the hat trick.
Bill Kinahan and Brad Carter
completed the scoring in a game
that saw the Crusaders trailing 3-2
after 20 minutes, then tied at five
heading into third period play.
For the Intermediate Bulls Glen
Warwick scored three while Gerry
Wheeler, Randy Clarke, and Gary
Ritchie scored two each. Bruce
Blake added a single along with
three assists while Ritchie also had
a three assist effort.

split the goaltending duties for the
Bulls while other members playing

Nichol, Bob Bridge, Don and
Kevin Hastie, Dale Edgar, Randy
White, Ross McCall, Kevin
Townsend and Mike Watson.
Bob Rowe and Gord Workman
were behind the bench while long
time supporters of the Inter
mediates, Bruce McCall and Al
Nichol dropped the puck for the
opening faceoff.
Referee Black and Linesman
Demaray and Hopper kept the
game under control assessing only
three minor penalties, all to the
Crusaders.
The Brussels Crusaders would
like to thank all the fans and
players for braving the weather to
make the night a success.
J.C. Hewitt’s powerplay goal
with a 1:42 remaining in the game
gave the Brussels Crusaders a 3-3
tie with the Lakeshore Winterhawks
Friday night in Southampton.
Trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes,
Tim Fritz scored twice in second
period play for a 2-1 lead.
Lakeshore tied the game midway
through the third period then went
ahead with less than five minutes to
play.
Derek Cooper made 35 saves for
the tie as did Lakeshofe’s Mike
Rourke.
The Crusaders play their final
league game Friday night when
they travel to Arthur. With playoffs
scheduled to start in February the
Crusaders could still finish
anywhere from first to fifth.

Ironmen, Barons
batter Brussels Bulls
"You don’t have to be Scotty
Bowman to know you are in
trouble when you look down at
your bench and see 12 regulars not
there."
That was Brussels Bulls' Coach
Scott Pettigrew's reaction after an
8-3 loss Sunday to the Hanover
Barons.
The Bulls started the game with
five players on the shelf with
injuries, including top scorers Greg
McNevan and Nate Bender.
Trailing 2-0 at the end of the first
period things got ugly. Baron's
goalie Don Spittai and Bulls'
winger Jeremy Beimes got into a
scuffle and when the Hanover
Barons cleared the bench several
fights broke out. By the time the
second period started 14 players
had been ejected, seven from each
team.
The Bulls played the rest of the
game with 12 players and three of
those were call ups from the
Juveniles. Juvenile goalie Rob
Johnston was forced into action and
faced 28 shots in 40 minutes of
play.
The Bulls got goals from Tim
Beyer, Ryan Robins and Jamie

Williams. Pete Mulder chipped in
with two goals.
Friday night the Bulls lost to the
second place Wingham Ironmen
6-1. Brussels came out flying but
could not beat Steve Schwartzen-
truber in the first period. The Bulls
had a chance to get back in the
game in the second when Pete
Mulder scored to make it 2-1.
Ironmen Chris Stevenson hit
Jeremy Beimes from behind after
the whistle and was given a five
minute major penalty. But Brussels
failed to take advantage giving up a
short handed goal.
The Bulls have a busy weekend
ahead with three games scheduled.
Friday night the Bulls head to
Hanover and then return home to
play first place Mt. Forest Saturday
night at 8 p.m. and then will
entertain Wingham Sunday at

Brussels
Atoms beat
Bayfield
It was a close runs, but a short-
staffed Brussels Atoms House
league team squeaked out a victory
over a hosting Bayfield team, Sat
urday, Jan. 15.
To fill in for some ailing players,
Tyler Campbell and Joel Heming
way came up from the Novice team
and did an excellent job, said
Coach Wayne Todd. Goalie Matt
Elliott made some great saves as
well to keep the boys in the game,
he said.
Bayfield came out ahead in the
first, only to have Marc Fischer go
end to end to tie it at 5:10. A sec
ond period goal by Campbell,
assisted by Stephen Todd put the
visitors in the lead.
Bayfield tied it in the third, but
less than 20 seconds later Todd
scored unassisted to launch the
Brussels team to the win.
