Group Committee plans ahead The regular meeting of Blyth UCW was held on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. Feme McDowell and Hannie Meier were in charge of devotions. Feme opened the meeting with a short poem, and "Standing on the Portal" was sung. Hannie read scripture Philippians 3: verses 13- 14 followed by the Lord's Prayer in unison. Feme read a poem, "New Leaf'. Devotions closed with the hymn "All the Way My Saviour Leads Me", a poem relating to John 6, "In God's Hands our Little Becomes Much" and prayer. Susan Howson then showed a very interesting video on Missions and Services in South Korea, New Guinea, South Africa and El Salvador. Also she read about missions and then gave the motto, "Prayer, Care and Share". Bonnie Shannon, president, presided over the business. Happy Birthday was sung to Hannie Meier and Happy Anniversary to Dorothy Daer in honour of her 55 th wedding anniversary. The UCW will be catering to the Lion's Club Jan. 27. The congregational meeting is on Monday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. The meeting closed with the UCW Benediction. A delicious lunch was prepared by Marjorie East, Ollie Craig, Loma Fraser and Joan Clark. SHARP forward to Winterfest at St. Boniface Separate School in Zurich on Jan. 29. George Reinink was invested Dec. 14 as a Beaver leader. Cubs enjoyed a Christmas campout in December along with a day of outdoor activities. Jan. 11 they attended a Blyth town council The first meeting of 1994 for the 1st Blyth Group Committee was held Jan. 10 at the Blyth Public School. Fifty boys are now registered in Blyth Scouting. All sections are making the best of the winter conditions. Since the Christmas break Beavers have enjoyed a day of tobogganing, and are now looking Students enjoy winter GRADE 3/4 This month Grade 3/4 is doing Inuit and Arctic studies. Mrs. Webster is helping students do research and learn more about Arctic life. What a good topic for a snowy time of year! GRADE 4/5 Grades 4/5 are learning plenty about Ontario in Social Studies but an even better way to leam about one's country and province is to study novels that are written by Canadians in a Canadian setting. Students focused on three Canadian mystery novels - "The Dragon Children" by Bryan Buchan set in Western Canada along the coast, "The Mystery of the Secret Tunnel" by Frances Shelley Wells, set in Newfoundland, and "Samantha's Secret Room" by Lyn Cook set in Penetanguishene, Ont. GRADE 7 Some of the Grade 7's have been practising on the volleyball teams. On Jan. 17, the Grade 7's toured CKNX 920 in Wingham as a follow up to their media literacy study of radios. Dan Sauv6 went on the show called Street Cents last Saturday and Sunday. GRADE8 Grade 8 has been busy organizing its fundraising which will pay for the end-of-the-year class trip. Students are planning on going to Toronto and visiting several attractions. Grade 7 and 8 will be going downhill skiing at Talisman, near Kimberly, on Jan. 24. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball tournament is coming up. Mrs. Laurie is coaching the girl's team and Mr. Mason is coaching the boys. 5 attend Rutabaga meeting The Blyth Rutabaga Festival committee held its second meeting Jan. 13. Only five interested persons were present. Fundraising events were discussed with one being a St. Patrick's Day Dance. Local service clubs will be contacted as to how and if they are interested in participating in this year's events. Also any local service group or organization interested in catering for the supper on Saturday should call Brenda 523-9541 or Michelle 523-9751. The next meeting is Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Michelle Richmond's. The future of the Rutabaga Festival depends upon the support of the community, organizers say, so they are hoping for a good attendance. meeting. Jan. 21-23 Cubs are planning a winter camp at the Wawanosh Centre. They will soon be working on First Aid and mapping. Scouts have been on an eight km. ski hike, and are making plans for a winter camp Feb. 4-6 at the farm of Phil Garriock. On June 19 two local boys, Shawn Clark and Chris Knox, will be presented with the Chief Scout Award. Congratula­ tions boys! Venturers held a winter camp Jan. 7-9 and are now making final plans for their annual duck dinner Feb. 17. Tickets will be on sale soon. All sections are looking forward to Scout-Guide week Feb. 20 - 27. Sunday, Feb. 20 both Guiding and Scouting groups will attend a local church service. On Wednesday, Feb. 23 they will enjoy a pot luck supper at the Blyth Community Centre starting at 7 p.m. BlvthJ People There were four tables in play at Memorial Hall Wednesday night. Winners were: high lady, Mabel Riley; high gent, Alma McCallum, playing as a man; low lady, Janet Lawrie; low gent, Graeme McDowell. Winners from the Jan. 10 euchre party at Blyth Memorial Hall were: high lady, Evelyn Christianson; high man, Klass deJong; low lady, Marion Haggitt; low man, Lome Dale; ladies' lone hands, Geraldine Dale and men's lone hands, Graeme McDowell.
