Many came out to root for the teams despite the rather miserable weather that dropped in that evening. Legion team goes bowling Students do free throw By Sandra Josling On Saturday, Jan. 8 the Brussels Legion participated in the Zone C-l bowling held in Clinton. Two teams competed for the Branch. Members were Deb Trollope, Deb Cann, Barb Fischer, Sue Mastnak, Julie Harrison and Sandra Josling (Team No. 1); Marvin Grimes, Frank Stretton, Eric Ross, John Harrison, Greg Wilson and Dave Hastings (Team No. 2). The bowlers had an early start on the day as they began rolling with a 240 and the low lady bowler was WZ talks of farming The fist meeting of the new year was held on Jan. 12 for the Majestic Women's Institute. President Ruth Bauer opened the meeting. A reminder that a survey from FWIO is to be filled out by each member and returned to the Guelph office as soon as possible was given. A roll call was answered with naming a dairy product you would miss if the farmer ran away. Business included the card party on Feb. 1 with the committee consisting of Yvonne Knight, Edna McLellan, Jean Oldfield and Jane DeVries. The second discussion was to leave the membership fees the same as last year. A quilt is to be put in on Jan. 24 at Doris McCall's. A gift is to be given to the board director to take to the FWIC convention in Truro, Nova Scotia in June. The nominating committee for the District needs the positions of assistant secretary-treasurer, Tweedsmuir and resolutions filled. Ruth Sauve spoke on the motto, "keep pint-sized people off man- sized machinery". A number of farm accidents involve children, who may not have proper control of machinery. Accidents, although they do involve children, also include adults who may through carelessness get injured. Older machinery may not have the safety equipment of the more modern ones but an accident can occur with either. Marie McTaggart spoke on farming. Melody White showed a display of everyday products that all include soya beans. She ended with Deb Trollope with a 65. The men's high roll was a 256 by Marvin Grimes and the low score was tied between Frank Stretton and John Harrison with a 142. Both teams had a fun day and left a lot of room for improvement for next year. Mitchell branch was the overall winner for the day. Results of the euchre held on Jan. 5 are as follows: high scores, Iona McLean and Bill Little; low scores, Ross Brighton and Vema Tunney; most lone hands, Al Coddington and Erma Brighton; most zeros, inviting members to a 4-H meeting on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Brussels library. Ruth Sauvd showed a sweatshirt she had decorated in a new method. A motion to pay the bills was made. It was also decided to give a donation to the Adelaide Hoodless Home and Erland Lee Home. The meeting closed with singing Happy Birthday to members. The next meeting will be held on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Brussels library. The next euchre is on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 7:45 p.m. Larry Nethery and Deb Best, won all their games to finish first in blind draw mixed darts; second was decided by a playoff game. The team of Gord Jacklin and Linda Bird were able to edge their opponents Dianne Bennett and Jim McLean. High shooters were Kitty Rutledge and Adam Smith with a 120 shop. Darts are held Tuesday evenings at 8:30 p.m. There will be a "Come in out of the Cold" pubnight at the Brussels Legion on Friday, Jan. 28 at 9 p.m. All are invited to join in the activities. The Brussels Legion Pipe Band will be hosting a Robbie Bums dance at the Brussels Legion Hall on Saturday, Jan. 22. Tickets are $7 each and will be available at the door. Music will be by the "Temptations". On Tuesday, Jan. 25 there will be a Change of Command Ceremony at the Legion. Family and friends are invited to be a part of this ceremony. The Cadet Corp of Branch 218 would appreciate your attendance at 7 p.m. By Amber Ruttan and Tanya Mawhinney The Brussels Public School is having a Knight's of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The students from Mr. Teall’s Grade 5/6 class, Mr. Wanless's Grade 6/7 and Mrs. Perrie's Grade 8 class will be participating. Each contestant will get 15 throws. Everyone who participates in this event will be eligible to receive a prize. The students from Mr. Teall's Grade 5/6 class have put up a couple of bird feeding stations around the school. The bird feeders are to attract the different kinds of birds. They are also up to help the birds find feed in the winter. They have already had a few visitors. Just like every other year the school is planning for the magazine sales. Two students from Mrs. Uhler's, Mrs. Teall's, Mr. Wanless's, and Mrs. Perrie's, Grade 8 class will be representing their class in certain decisions regarding this matter. The resource teacher Mrs. Cousins attended a meeting concerning the upcoming Invention Convention. Brussels Public School has received permission to have Junior Kindergarten starting in September. On Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the school there will be an information meeting concerning Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten. Lodge meets The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge took place on Tuesday, Jan. 11 with Noble Grand Lois McCutcheon presiding. At this meeting members welcomed Sister Jean Hodgert D.D.
