B elgraveThe news from Mabel Wheeler hosts UCW Compiled by Helen Stonehouse Phone 887-94871 Residents enjoy holidays Paul and Shannon Weitendorf and children Lisa and Erin of Belgrave spent the holidays with the girls' grandparents Mrs. Pauline Jackson of Chatsworth and Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Maher of Owen Sound. Lisa and Erin enjoyed tobogganing with their uncle Clare Maher and cousins Robyn and Allyson. They toured the down­ town Christmas light display. On Boxing Day they visited their great Grandma, Marie Maher at Lee Manor in Owen Sound to show their new Christmas dolls from Santa and they sang Christmas carols. Paul and Shannon took advant­ age of the heavy snow and went cross-country skiing at Inglis Falls and Harrison Park. Everyone had a great time. Chris Palmer of Goderich spent a few days last week with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cook. The Evening Unit of the UCW met at the home of Mabel Wheeler on Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. Twenty-one members answered the roll call. The leader Muriel Coultes opened the meeting with the poem "What Will You Do With This Year That's So New?" She welcomed everyone and thanked Mabel for the use of her home. Lorna Cook had charge of the worship service on New Year's. She opened with prayer and hymns "Standing at the Portal of the , Ruth Johnston read the scripture Opening Year" and "As with Gladness Men of Old" were sung. The scripture from Matt. 2, 1-5 was read by Donna Shaw. The meditation "Hokus Pokus" was read by Loma. The offering was received and dedicated and Loma closed the worship with prayer. Barbara Anderson had charge of the program from the study "Mission Into 21st Century". She told how the mission has changed and the different changes through the years, such as telephone, radio, television and the increasing number of women in leading roles in Canada. New members join Knox Ethel from Luke 10: 25-37. Laura Johnston read an article written by Patty Evans, "What Does Mission Mean to Me". Freda Johnston closed the program with an article "Putting People to Work". Muriel Coultes announced there would be lunch following church service Jan. 16, with Mabel Wheeler's group in charge, also the Huron-Perth UCW Annual meeting will be held Jan. 24 in Exeter and on Feb. 10, a meeting at 11:30 a.m. in Goderich "Meet the Moderator", Rev. Stanley McKay. The February meeting will be held in the church schoolroom with Wilma Higgins and Irene Lamont as hostesses. The meeting closed with the Mizpah benediction and lunch was served by Jane Grasby and Lois Anderson. The news from The service of Communion was held in Knox United Church, Belgrave on Sunday morning, Jan. 9, with Rev. Paul Boughton, minister. The following new members were received by transfer of membership, Jean Kennedy from Londesboro United Church and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Spivey from Wingham United Church. At this service also the commissioning of the Pastoral Relations committee took place. Winners were: high lady, Mrs. Jane Grasby; most two's, Mrs. Edythe Coultes; nearest 50, Mrs. Jean Pattison; low lady, Mrs. Lois Chamney; high man, Tom Pfeiffer; most two's, Bob Grasby; nearest 50, Ross Taylor and low man, Gordon Bosman. There will be euchre again next Wednesday starting at 8 p.m. Bill Dobson and Dorothy Dil­ worth hosted 10 tables of euchre at the Ethel Hall, Monday evening. Winners were: high lady, Betty Coulter; low lady, Helen Cullen; high man, Jim Cooper; low man, Ross Stephenson; most lone hands, Gertie Lambkin, Bob Bateman, and Walter Harrfield; tally card draws, Isabel Bremner, Anne Cooper, Ruby Armstrong, George Pearson, Scott McLean, Violet Smith, Adri­ an Verstoep, June Jacklin and Elmer Best; 50/50 draw, Harold Coulter. The next euchre will be Jan. 17 at 8:30 p.m. First draw in Brussels curling ends There it goes K member of the Wingham Girls team crashes to the ice in front of a Teeswater opponent as the puck rolls away from both, in this game in Blyth on Sunday night. Teeswater defeated Wingham by a score of 4-2. Several girls from the Blyth and Belgrave communities play for the Wingham learn. The first draw of the Brussels Curling Club ended recently. The top team of the mixed curling with 48 points was Mike Alexander, Pauline Patterson, Doug Dale and Carman Bernard. In second place with 43.5 points was the team of Ken McDonald, Nora Stephenson, John Vanass and Dorothy Kelly. Third with 41.5 points was Brad Speiran, Fran Bremner, Orval Bauer and Jean Bewley. The top team of the ladies' curling with 38 points was Valerie Shortreed, Doris Fischer, Gloria Wilbee and Dianne Duskocy. The second place team with 32.5 points was Brenda Linton, Marie Stute, and Allison Purcell. The third place team with 32 points was Marg Taylor, Sandra Pepper and Marianne Warwick. Sympathy of the community is extended to Elizabeth and Dick Dewit, Jake and Wilma Hiemstra and families on the recent loss of their mother Mrs. Henry Hiemstra of Listowel. Sympathy is also extended to George and Eileen Gill and family on the recent loss of George's mother Mildred Gill and their infant grandson Zachary Wood of Gorrie.
