Midgets efforts unrewarded
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets participated
in the Silver Stick finals in Forest
this past weekend. Although the
team played solid hockey
throughout, the results were mixed
as Blyth won one game and lost
two.
Blyth opened the tournament last
Friday against Port Stanley. Blyth
couldn't get their offence in motion
as Port Stanley scored a goal in
each period shutting out Blyth 3-0.
Mike de Jong kept Blyth in the
contest with some stellar puck
stopping but the loss proved costly
as Blyth lost two players for the
remainder of the toumey due to
injuries.
The Midgets returned on
Saturday for their final two round
robin games as the rest of the team
came through with some spirited
play. Forest provided the
opposition in the first game as
Blyth stormed back late in the
game to edge Forest 5-4 in
overtime. Forest took a 1-0 first
period lead but Peter Craig scored
the only two goals in the second to
give Blyth a 2-1 lead. Ryan
Chamney assisted on Craig’s first
goal while enjoying a power play,
then Chamney and Casey Boven
assisted on the second as Craig
pinched in from the blueline and
put a shifty deke on the Forest
cage-keeper.
Craig and Chamney teamed up
again 43 seconds into the third to
give Blyth a 3-1 lead. The goalie
thought he had Craig's shot covered
up but Chamney stole the puck
from the goalie, flipping it over his
shoulder. A five minute lapse by
Blyth gave Forest the lead as they
scored three straight goals to make
Ferguson.
Blyth advanced to the semi-final
round and came up against
Chesley. Chesley won the hard
fought contest by the score of 6-4
which eliminated Blyth from
further tournament play. Blyth
goals were scored by Stewart, 2;
Mike Salverda, one and Haggitt,
one. Assists went to Greg Toll,
two; Armstrong, one; Trent
Richmond, one, Anderson, one;
Haggitt, one and Stewart, one.
In regular schedule action Blyth
downed Milverton 3-2. Blyth built
up a 3-0 lead on goals by Rutledge,
assisted by Armstrong and Ben
Craig, Anderson assisted by Brian
Marks and Salverda, and assisted
by Greg Blok and Salverda.
The Blyth boys came up with one
of their strongest performances of
the year in an 8-5 loss to Mitchell
which is the first place team in the
league. Blyth goals were scored by
Salverda, three; Rutledge, one;
Marks, one. Assists went to
Rutledge, two; Marks, two; Craig,
one and Mark Wilson, one.

a 4-3 lead.
Blyth regrouped to tie the game
with six minutes remaining.
Wilfred Datema spotted Chamney
unattended in front of the Forest net
and Chamney's second effort
produced the tying goal.
Regulation time expired with the
score deadlocked at 4, which set up
a 10 minute sudden victory period.
Blyth had regained the game
momentum and it culminated with
the winning goal less than two
minutes into the extra frame.
Datema's drop in was recovered by
Danny Gibbings behind the Forest
net. Gibbings spotted Christopher
Howson cruising into the slot and
Howson became the hero as he
one-timed the pass through a maize
of legs.
Blyth then met Schomberg on
Saturday night, needing a win to
advance to the Tournament Final.
Schomberg outnumbered and
outplayed the locals as they secured
a birth in the finals with a well
played 4-1 win.
Schomberg scored early in the
first and added two special team
goals early in the second period for
a 3-0 lead after two. Blyth finally
got on the board two minutes into
the third. Gibbings and Howson did
the spade work in the comers as
Datema blasted home a screened
shot.
Blyth played a gritty third but the
work never showed up on the
scoreboard. Schomberg finished the
game with a goal in the final
minute and secured a birth in the
final with this 4-1 win.
Once in the final, Schomberg
claimed the coveted Silver Stick
with a 1 -0 victory over Howick.

to put Brussels ahead 3-1.

allow the Hawks the equalizer.
The win over Walkerton set up a
key matchup Sunday afternoon in
Hanover against the third place
Barons. Brussels entered the game
trailing the Barons by five points
but with two games in hand. But
the Bulls came up a little short
losing 2 - 1. It was a defensive
struggle that could have gone either
way. Greg Brown scored his first
goal of the season late in the
second period. Bulls defenceman
Josh Alexander was taken to the
of their own for a final score of 5-4,
Zurich.
Wheeler played a great game in
goal but was under a lot of pressure
in the last five minutes of the game.
The team travelled to Seaforth
Dec. 27 to face the Seaforth I team.
The teams played an exciting first
period with both teams having
good scoring opportunities, while
the defense and goalies stood firm.
