with a 9-0 thumping
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets played two
league games over the holidays,
losing a well played game to
Goderich 5-4 on Dec. 22 and then
watched as Seaforth humbled the
locals 9-0 on Dec. 27.
Against Goderich, Blyth played
catch up hockey throughout and
almost tied the contest in the dying
moments. Goderich built a 2-0 first
period lead but Blyth knotted the
score with two goals in the first
minute of the second period. Ben
Hakkers and Brian McNichol
assisted on the opening power play
goal as Christopher Howson scored
on a tip in.
Nineteen seconds later Wilfred
Datema assisted on the tying goal
as Ryan Chamney finished off a
rink length dash by cashing in his
own rebound. Although Goderich
took the lead again three minutes
later Blyth quickly tied the game
once more. While killing penalty
Jason Heipel stole the puck deep in
the Goderich zone and fired on the
net. Chamney glided in and
snapped the rebound upstairs.
Goderich took a 5-3 lead before
the lead which set up an
entertaining third frame. The play
alternated ends throughout the
period and Blyth inched to within a
goal with just under six minutes to
play. While on a power play,
Heipel set up Datema's blueline
blast which found nothing but
twine behind a screened Goderich
puckstopper. Although Blyth had
plenty of opportunities to tie the
game, a strong opposition defence
thwarted their every attempt and
Goderich left town with a hard

Crusaders move into first place
Set to strike
Members of the Brussels Crusaders and the Arthur Tigers face-off as the puck is about to hit
the surface. The Crusaders squeezed out a 6-5 victory with 10 minutes remaining in the
game.
J. C. Hewitt's second goal of the
game with 10 minutes remaining
gave the Brussels Crusaders a 6-5
win over the visiting Arthur Tigers
Sunday afternoon.
The Crusaders, who improve to
11-5-1, also received two goals
from Tim Fritz and singles from
Brad Carter and Ron Strome.
Brussels held a 3-1 first period
lead and at one time led 5-1 before
two Arthur goals in 20 seconds
early in the third tied the score.
Derek Cooper, in net for his sixth
win of the year, came up big in the
earned 5-4 win.
Seaforth provided the opposition
Dec. 27 as Blyth served up some
Christmas turkey to their visitors,
getting smoked 9-0 in the process.
Seaforth scored early and often and
Blyth never recovered as they
watched their guests score
powerplay goals in giving Blyth a
clinic on how the game should be
played.
Due to their Consolation
Championship victory at the
Wingham Regional Silver Stick
Tournament, Blyth has accepted an
invitation to the Silver Stick Finals
to be held on Jan. 7, 8 and 9 in
Forest. Hopefully the team can
regroup and string together a solid
weekend of hockey.
The Midgets extend a huge thank
you to Radford's Farm Equipment
in Londesboro for sponsoring them
in this prestigious shinny showcase.
Bulls pick up 3 points
Santa must have been good to the
Western Junior C team. During two
games last week, the Brussels Bulls
picked up three of four possible
points.
Tuesday night, the Bulls hung on
for a 5-4 win over the second place
Wingham Ironmen. Greg McNevan
scored twice, including a
shorthanded effort, to lead the
Brussels' attack. Brian Zabel, Nate
Bender and Pete Mulder added
single goals. The Bulls led this one
5-2 but Wingham refused to quit.

Two nights later, the Bulls hosted
the Hanover Barons and came
away with a 4-4 tie. The Bulls fell
behind 3-1 in this one before
rallying in the third period for the
draw. Brian Zabel and Jonathan
Lane scored powerplay markers
while Nate Bender and Greg
McNevan also added singles. The
point was important as Brussels
races to catch the Barons for third
place. After the weekend action,
Hanover is six points ahead of the
Bulls but Brussels has two games
in hand. Three of the Barons last
