The program gives national commodity associations and other organizations the opportunity to de- velop strategics and tools necessary to educate producers and to implement on-farm safety, initiatives consistent with international standards. Nine national groups have received funding under the program; the Canadian Pork Council, Dairy Farmers of Canada, Canadian Mushroom Growers, Canadian Horticultural Council, Canadian Hatching Egg Producers, Canadian Hatchery Federation and the Canadian Egg Producers Council. In total $1.4 million in funding and close to 5650,000 in industry contributions have been received. The safety program is a partnership between the federal government and national producer organizations. It is open to all commodities. The next application deadlines are September 15 and November 1, 1998.0 Monsanto scholarship program Since 1991, Monsanto has provided scholarships to farm children. This year, Monsanto will award $1,000 scholarships to 50 high school students from Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Students must be from a family farm and be enrolled at a Canadian educational institution in first year agriculture, agri-science or manage- ment. Criteria for selection includes academic standards and leadership in the community. Application forms for this year's program are available at high schools, local OMAFRA offices, through 4-H or by calling Monsanto at 905-814-2499.
