The Rural Voice, 1998-08, Page 58Huron study says dug wells have more contaminants The type of well residents in Huron County draw their water from determines the purity of their water, a study released by the Huron County Health Unit. Misinterpretations of data in the News past made it appear well contamination is higher than it is, said Sheryl Feagan, acting director of the health unit. The study showed only 15 per cent of drilled wells had any bacterial contamination while 74 per cent of dug wells had problems. "Dug wells are susceptible and extremely unstable," said Feagan. The study recommends testing well water regularly because SUMMER SIZZLERS IN MOUNT FOREST 1995 Plymouth Voyager Rally, green, V•6, 3.3 engine. auto., over drive, p.s., p.b., p.w.. p.l., p.s., p.1., AM/FM stereo, cassette, air conditioning, tinted glass, cruise control, tilt steering, clock, lighting group, intermittent wiper, bug deflector, 7 pass. seating, overhead console with compass. 166,200 km. 1994 Dodge Ram ST 4x4, red, 314 ton, 6 cylinder diesel, standard 5 spd., over drive, p.s., p.b., AM/FM stereo, air conditioning, clock, intermittent wiper, running boards, oxliner, Cl. Hwy. #6 North, MOUNT FOREST (519) 323-1981 54 THE RURAL VOICE conditions can change. Dug wells need to be tested more often than drilled wells. Nitrate levels were also considered higher in drilled wells. Both dug and drilled wells had similar ratios of about 30 per cent with more than the recommended levels of sodium. Drilled wells, however, had more incidences of high levels of fluoride, with 43 per ccnt of drilled wells compared to just over seven per cent in dug wells. Homeowners in central and southern parts of the county should check the fluoride levels of their well water. Dug wells are most apt to have too little fluoride in the water for protecting tooth decay.0 Become a leader this September Leadership in Action '98 fall program is three days of hands-on leadership development for leaders of rural organizations. The program is organized and run by staff of OMAFRA and consists of three days and two evenings where participants share their ideas and concerns with others. At the three-day program participants will learn how to: manage and empower volunteers in their organization, adapt their leadership styles to the group or situation, assess their own leadership skills and the performance of their organization, conduct effective meetings, resolve conflict in a group and deal with difficult personalities, collect valuable resource material and participate in hands-on practical sessions. The program will be held from September 30 to October 2, 1998 at Geneva Park (near Orillia). The cost of the program is $250 per participant. Program costs include two nights accommodation, all meals, seminar instruction and course materials. For more information contact the Walkerton OMAFRA office at 881-3301 or 1-800-265-3023.0
