neighbour Thomas John Sanders to
dispose of tires illegally dumped on
his property or bury them as a fire
precaution.
On the understanding it was a
temporary measure, the ministry
supervised the burial of the tires in a
trench on Sanders' property, said the
ministry's area supervisor Phil Bye.
Murdoch, a farmer himself, says
he opposed the burial right from the
start.
"It was the dumbest thing 1 have
ever seen," he says adding he asked
then environment minister Ruth Grier
to intervene but got no response.
Sanders, who has been fined more
than $350,000 for operating an illegal
waste disposal site and non
compliance of an order under the
Environmental Protection Act, has
since disappeared.
The ministry then ordered Max
Karge who holds a mortgage on the
farm to remove the tires. The
Environmental Appeal Board
reversed the order but found Karge to
be in care and control of the property.
Braeker admits it's hard to prove
the toxins are harming his family,
though he believes they are.
"There's some pretty nasty
contaminants in that trench," he says.
They include cobalt, cresols,
manganese and diphenylamine.
Richard Lindgren of the Canadian
Environmental Law Association
which represents Braeker said it's
unacceptable for the ministry to
"hope that the toxicity will somehow
disappear over time."
There was no debt on the farm
when in 1991 Braeker wanted to
borrow money to build his son a
home on the property. "But our
financial institution told us there was
no money available because of the
tire dump," says Braeker.
Now the family would like "to get
out of here" but there is no hope of
selling the farm until the water
situation is finally resolved. "Our real
estate agent refused to even list the
farm for sale, she said there was no
point," says Braeker.
Braeker has now given up his
dream of running an organic cattle
operation with his son Paul. "I don't
even feel right about letting my cattle
drink the water ... we're very close
to being ruined ... this is a real
horror story," he says.0
