The Rural Voice, 1998-08, Page 29said in the past 10 years the company
has maintained 65 per cent of its
coverage in farm business.
Back in 1856, Thomas Marshall
became a forerunner in farm mutuals.
As the first secretary and director of
Dumfries Mutual Mutual Insurance
Company in Cambridge he was also
the head of Ontario's first farm
mutual company. At the time, five-
year policies were bought for $1 on a
$100 premium note. A lot has
changed since then, last year the
company had $4 million in gross
written premiums.
Every farm mutual has its own
history but one thing all companies
share is a commitment to the
communities they serve.
"Farm mutuals can survive
because they provide local service,"
said Jim Cardiff, manager of
McKillop in Seaforth. "The majority
of our business is within 25 miles."
Will farm mutuals in Ontario be
able to say the same thing in another
100 years? Many hope they will.0
