The Rural Voice, 2019-09, Page 69efforts). At times the sound of falling
droppings from the feeding
caterpillars sounded like rain.
Fortunately they don’t usually cause
major defoliation in maple woodlots.
By the time you read this column,
the caterpillars will have
metamorphosed into moths, mated
and laid their egg masses.
Some readers may have noticed
there is potentially a reasonably good
seed crop for many tree species this
year. Last year was a very poor tree
seed production year.
And finally, in the June issue of
the The Rural Voice I wrote about the
termination of the 50 Million Tree
Planting Program due to cancellation
of funding support by the Ontario
government. Forests Ontario, who
administered the program, has now
received a funding commitment from
the federal government for the next
five years to continue with a similar
tree planting program. Details about
what the restored and revised
program will look like are still being
worked out. ◊
