The Rural Voice, 2019-06, Page 31acceptance or uptake can take time.
“Getting support from suppliers was
a big challenge,” remembers Green.
Ordering parts from Europe can take
weeks. “It’s been a nightmare for the
engine side of it but has gotten a little
better over the last half year,” said
Green.
Dairy farming is an asset-rich,
cash-poor business but the advantage
of that is banks have assets to grab
hold of. “There is your opportunity.”
So is seeing that sideshoots
emerge from diversification. The
anaerobic digesters on the farm are
fed waste organics. To transport the
materials, the Greens started a small
trucking company. Moreover, the
Greens and other farmers/companies
with biodigesters formed a company
called Cornerstone Renewables to
source material as a collective and
“back each other up.”
Be mindful, however, that non-
farm income can mess up a farmer’s
ability to transfer farms to the next
generation. Green advised setting up
a second company for the diversified
businesses to uncomplicate taxation
issues. ◊
