Cows have been in the new barn
since August of last year but a few
issues had to be ironed out before
they hosted an open house – the
biggest one being the replacement of
new “eyes” on the robots which
positions the milkers on the udders.
Now that the robots are working
properly, it saves each family
member an hour of work per day
estimated Niek.
The family crops 680 acres to
grow all the feed they need for the
dairy herd. They use a Supreme
International TMR vertical mixer to
feed in all the barns.
Niek and Sonya took time out of
their busy open house day to give
tours though the different barns. The
progression from small and dark
barns to the new, bright, spacious
facility was fascinating to see. It’s
not surprising to see the faces of the
van Stee family beaming on this
magazine’s cover as they received
congratulations from neighbours and
fellow dairy farmers on their modern,
new facility. ◊
