Winning a Master Breeder Shield
wasn’t a goal, per ce, but Kevin says
he prefers to work with good-looking
cows and the shield acknowledges
his breeding success. “I’m quite
content with the nucleus of the herd
as it currently is. I believe the heifer
pens are full of potential and the
future breeding of more high-scoring
cows is achievable,” he says. “It’s
just a matter of picking the right bulls
to use and having a little bit of luck
too.”
Holstein Canada shared
pictures of the inside of
Wayne Martin’s tie stall barn
revealing a row of beautiful udders in
a clean facility. It’s clear Wayne
takes pride in the herd he purchased
from his father two and half years
ago.
Wayne and Karen Martin milk
cows under the Marfloacres prefix
while raising two children, two-year-
old Dalyn and nine-month old
Leanna.
He admits the family was excited
when they got the call that they had
earned their first Master Breeder
shield. “It’s not that it was a goal, but
it acknowledges a lot of hard work,”
says Wayne.
The breeding focus at Marfloacres
is breeding type with a decent
amount of production. “I focus on
bulls with good udder numbers,” says
Wayne. Dairy strength is another
characteristic he looks for.
Bulls that have worked welld in
his barn include Comestar Lheros,
Pine-Tree Sid and Gen-Mark StMatic
Sanchez.
When asked to name the top
management techniques employed at
Marfloacres, cow comfort was top of
the list. “We bed with lots of straw
on Pasture Mats and we have really
good ventilation in our barn that was
renovated in 2009,” says Wayne.
Growing quality home-grown feed is
also a focus.
Looking to the future, this young
farmer says he wants to keep
breeding good cows. “I really like
what I do. Working with the cows
has always been a pleasure for me,”
he says. “I enjoy breeding cows to
get the next good one...to breed
better and better cows.
