McQuail to seek NDP nom. in coming election Tony McQuail, ecological farmer and environmentalist, plans to seek the NDP nomination in the coming federal election. McQuail first ran for the NDP in 1980 and served three terms as an elected trustee on the Huron County School Board. He also worked at Queen’s Park as the executive assistant to the Hon. Elmer Buchanan, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Speaking with a group of supporters after the parade, McQuail stated his priorities will be electoral reform, a regenerative economy and tax fairness. Regarding electoral reform, McQuail said, “If we are going to make steady progress on the issues important to the majority of Canadians we need a parliament where they are represented accurately. It may be acceptable to Justin Trudeau and the Liberals to steal Fairvote Canada’s slogan in 2015, promise to “Make Every Vote Count” and then do nothing. It is not acceptable to me to leave nine million Canadian voters casting votes that earn no representation. It gives us ‘Phony Majority Governments’ where a party that has less than 40 per cent popular support ends up with more than half the seats and 100 per cent control of parliament for four years. Women and working Canadians got the vote 100 years ago; it is about time their vote counted for representation every election.” McQuail ran the first time because “The NDP was calling for energy conservation and renewable energy to deal with inflation caused by the Arab Oil embargo which had quadrupled the price of oil.
