Pancakes mark Craigs’ final day at Walton Inn
Another week flies by and we are
in the final week before the start of
school. Many families have been
busy shopping for school supplies,
clothes or taking final day
excursions with the kids. As bus
drivers, we have had our “welcome
back” meeting, were given our bus
routes and completed our practise
drive to familiarize ourselves with
any new stops.
Our trip planners extraordinaire
have been busy again this past week
exploring Bruce County. Rick and
Margaret McInroy with Lillian
Appleby and Pat Hunking were
away for the day to Cargill. They
spent the day learning about the
Greenoch Swamp and went on a
train ride around the block to view
the workers’ homes. In the 1860s,
there were five sawmills in the area
and many houses were built to house
them.
They also stopped in at Margaret’s
Mercantile, a lovely little store with
handcrafted items, treats and snacks.
Students run the visitors’ programs
for the summer and then members of
the Saugeen Conservation run the
tours until Labour Day.
An interesting point of history is
that many who came to the area were
Irish Catholic and many there were
Protestants. So many of the
buildings were divided, such as the
post office; two entrances with a
wall down the middle. The school
was also divided, but this time, the
upstairs was for one religion and the
downstairs for the other. The
foursome enjoyed learning about the
area and the development of the
Greenoch Swamp and Cargill.
It was party time for the ladies’
group in Brussels as they celebrated
the one August birthday. The large
group gathered at JR’s to celebrate
the special event of Nora
Stephenson’s 90th birthday. Wishing
birthday best wishes to Nora
included Cora Alcock, Joan Bernard,
Merle Cousins, Jean Davidson, Lois
McCutcheon, Eleanor Stevenson,
Esther McCutcheon, Betty Cardiff,
Isabel Wheeler, Sandra Clark, Mary
TenPas, Edna McLellan, Dona
Knight, Jane Hall, Dale Chesher,
Alice Marks, Sandra Cable and
Grace, Val Nagels, Audrey Cardiff,
Marcy Bremner, Betty Campbell,
Betty McCutcheon and Bev Palmer.
Happy birthday Nora.
It was a lovely day for the
wedding of Edward Glanville and
Jessica McClure on Saturday. They
were married at Egmondville United
Church and the reception was held at
Seaforth Legion. Edward is the son
of Robert and Jackie Glanville of
Walton. It was a beautiful wedding
with the attendants dressed in a wine
colour. A delicious dinner was
enjoyed by all.
Coming home from Alberta to
attend the Glanville wedding were
sister Joelle and Uncle Paul and
Aunt Teresa and Meaghen. They
were very glad to see daughter Erica,
who has spent the last six weeks in
Walton with her grandparents. Erica
has enjoyed a fun visit with Lorne
and Bonnie Glanville.
The Walton Inn had its final day
with Graeme and Helen on Friday.
Graeme was on hand to whip up and
serve his famous Walton pancakes.
Everyone had a sample of pancake
for a last taste of his pancakes. A
good crowd enjoyed the morning
fare, along with fruit and cheese tray
and good conversation.
Saturday morning breakfast at the
Walton Inn was exactly the same as
any Saturday morning. The new
owners of the Inn were unable to be
there, due to a death in their family.
They will be away for their first
week of ownership, so Graeme and
Helen, will continue for another
week as managers.
Celebrating birthdays the past
week were Terri Gulutzen, Pat
Nolan, Bradley Shortreed, Blaine
Hackwell, Cheryl Lee, Earl
Pennington, Owen Dalton, Sarah
Fraser, Brent Godkin, Sandra Zwep,
Emmitt Shortreed and Stephen
Ryan. Happy birthday to all.
