The first batch of 2017
International Plowing Match (IPM)
Legacy Scholarship recipients was
announced at the Huron County
Plowing Match’s gala dinner last
Friday.
The scholarship was established as
a way to give back to the youth of
the community, which was a focus
of the organizing committee for the
world-class event.
IPM 2017 Chair Jacquie Bishop,
alongside selection committee
member Brian McGavin and Paul
Dodds of the Huron County
Plowman’s Association presented
the scholarships at the gala.
Each of the recipients received
$2,000, a DVD of videos and
pictures from the 2017 IPM and a
keepsake photo book from the event.
Recipients included:
• Emily Mitchell, the daughter of
Neil and Marie of Walton.
Emily is attending Brock
University to study Concurrent
Education and is focusing on
English and geography as her
teachable. She also hopes to
obtain her qualification for
physical education after finishing
her degree.
Mitchell said that being part of the
inclusion team at Central Huron
Secondary School in her Grade 12
year was an eye-opening experience
for her, teaching her that everyone
has a unique set of challenges in
their life and being kind and
compassionate can go a long way
toward helping people overcome
those challenges.
• Emma Baan, the daughter of
Don and Monique Baan of Walton.
Emma is studying Business
Administration at Georgian College
in Barrie with hopes to work in
human resources.
Having volunteered at the 2017
IPM, Emma said that she learned
that teamwork is important when
working with such a large crew on a
large event. The event taught her the
importance of organization and
communication skills, and will
always be a highlight of her teenage
years. The experience helped her to
decide on her career aspirations.
• Maggie Burgsma, daughter of
Jeff and Janine of Kinburn.
Maggie is entering her fourth year
of a Bachelor of Arts Degree at
Dordt University in Sioux Centre,
Iowa. Her major is in Accounting
and Business Administration:
Finance. She is also pursuing a
minor in music performance.
With plans to graduate next year,
Maggie hopes to work with a public
accounting firm and eventually
transition to a smaller firm and work
with the farming community. She
wants to serve farmers to help them
grow their business, saying that
farming is a passion, not a job.
Maggie and her family were part
of the entertainment at the 2013
IPM, performing two music sets and
enjoying the experience. She said
that playing for that audience was
encouraging and allowed her to
enjoy being on stage.
Working with the organizers for
the event showed her how dedicated
those behind the annual IPM have to
be to make it a success.
• Sean Mitchell, son of Neil and
Marie of Walton.
Sean is currently studying
Environmental Science at the
University of Guelph.
He has volunteered for Huron-
Bruce Federal Liberal candidate
Allan Thompson as youth chair in
2015 and is reprising that role this
year.
As chair, his job includes activities
designed to increase voter turnout,
social media advertising and
knocking on doors. He said the
experience has taught him to think
before speaking and value
networking and commitment.
Sean was also recently named
Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador.
• Delayna Smith, daughter of
Chris and Shelley of Brussels.
Delayna is currently attending
Carleton University in Ottawa
studying Industrial Design
Engineering, focusing on interface
and software design. She hopes to
have a career in building apps and
kiosk machines.
As an active member of her
community, she learned the value of
taking time out of her day for others.
While entertaining at local nursing
homes and adult day centres she
truly saw this as an important skill to
have.
Delayna has contributed to her
community through sports, music
and coaching.
• Laura Higgins, daughter of
Bruce and Kim of Belgrave.
Laura recently completed her
Bachelor of Arts Honours Political
Science and plans to pursue
a Master’s of Arts Global
Governance.
As a former Huron County
Plowing Match Princess, Laura
learned confidence in public
speaking and how to behave in an
interview, two skills that have
proven invaluable to her in both
academia and the work world.
Through community involvement,
Higgins said her most valuable
cultivated skills is networking.
She also credits Huron County
with many of her opportunities and
says she will continue to be an
ambassador for the community
going forward.
