The Corporation of the Municipality of Huron East Dated at the Municipality of Huron East this 19th day of August, 2019 Brad Knight, CAO/Clerk Municipality of Huron East 72 Main Street South Seaforth, Ontario N0K 1W0 519-527-0160 Volunteer groups return to work as September nears Oh my, August is coming to an end. Laments are heard in many places and to balance that fact, there are smiles of glee noting that the days of summer are soon done. September often feels like a new year, a new beginning, as the volunteer business of life resumes. The hiatus for suspended business is done and the meetings of the organizations we come to rely on are being scheduled now. It’s the hint, slack time is past. The Brussels Fair folks are already in business mode with deadlines coming up fast and lots to be done before Sept. 17. Check your fair entry book and get planning now. A pork chop dinner is part of the Tuesday evening fun this year. See one of the fair board folks to get your ticket soon. Life can be tough sometimes, but you know the alternative. So celebrations are very important. When you think about the days of our lives, it’s often family and friends that take up the thinking spots. Time spent in casual or planned events are often our memories of good times. Nora Stephenson knows how to celebrate life and so her friends have helped make her 90th birthday memorable. One dinner has already happened with more good stuff in the offing, and that’s even before the big day, which is Saturday. So a greeting, a big smile and a hug are in order any time you see Nora this week. When planning surprise parties, it’s always good to plan ahead, even before the actual date of the event for increased success. We can take lessons from the Baker children. We know Allan was chuckling from heaven on Saturday evening as Shirley was momentarily stunned to see a yard full of vehicles and then familiar faces as a thought stopper. Then a t-shirt and tiara reminded her of an approaching birthday. Oh yes, she was surprised! Time to think about the next season, what you can do to make you or the community better. We have lots of choices or the potential to have in our community what you need to make life good. Reaching out is often the first step to making a positive move, don’t think, just do it. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY At the Branch New ‘Ace’ ticket outlets found Helping out After the Royal Canadian Legion Brussel Branch’s wildly successful second installment of the ‘Catch the Ace’ fundraiser, members of the organizing committee decided to give back to the community, donating $500 to numerous organizations including the Brussels Leo Club, a youth organization affiliated with the Brussels Lions Club community group. (Photo submitted) By Jo-Ann McDonald There have been a few things going on at the Brussels Legion Branch this week. The week began with a meeting of the Catch the Ace committee. They went over the changes to be implemented with the new licence. A correction on the date of the start of the draw is that it will be held Sept. 27. The store owners who handled the sales for the last draw were given gifts of appreciation by the committee. Some of the retailers are not going to participate in this next round of ticket sales, but new ones have been found. Tickets will be available from Jam Jar and Eatery, Bulk and Bargain, Brussels Variety and McDonald Home Hardware with a Walton location still to be confirmed. The Brussels Legion will always have tickets for sale daily from 4 - 6 p.m. and Saturday 3 - 6 p.m. or when open at other times. We look forward to the continued support in the next draw. The Branch will be closed for the long weekend. The Branch welcomed the Huron Perth Abate Chapter 14 to the Branch on Saturday afternoon. There were approximately 32 bikes and just over 40 folks. They were participating in “Ride for the Cure”, a fundraiser for the Huron Respite Network. The monies raised goes to supporting children and teens with mental health difficulties, autism and developmental disabilities allowing them to go to summer camps. The Branch has been accepting monies in a donation jar all summer and added a Branch donation of $50. Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald made the donation to the president of the club, Mark Spanky. A few familiar faces in the group included Joe McClelland, Joe Dewartz of Walton and Dave Hastings Jr. All are invited to come to the Clinton Raceway for the Driver’s Charity Challenge this weekend where four local Legions benefit from the generosity of the drivers. There is also a silent auction table, bake table, food booth and a barbecued chicken dinner available. Giving back While originally designed as a fundraiser for the Brussels Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, the second iteration ‘Catch the Ace’ fundraiser was so successful that the organizers are giving back to other community groups.
