Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan wants to investigate the county’s food bank funding, after finding out that local banks are charged by the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre for food. MacLellan raised the issue at Huron County Council’s Aug. 14 meeting. He referenced the county’s annual funding to the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre, which began at $60,000 per year (based on a model of $1 per resident) and has since increased to $66,000 per year, and asked for a report on the centre’s funding model and how the county’s money is being spent. MacLellan said he was approached by someone who told him that the centre actually charges local food banks for food, which was not what he thought was happening. He thought the centre was using its buying power, purchasing food in bulk for 10-20 cents on the dollar, and distributing it locally. He wanted to know if the county’s money was being used to buy food or for salaries or overhead associated with the centre and what was being done with the money procured from food sales to local food banks. If the county’s money is being used for an expense other than the purchase of food, he said, perhaps the county should look into an alternative method of funding the banks so the money is doing as much good as it can in the community. Several councillors, including Huron County Warden Jim Ginn, said they too were not aware of the fact that the centre charges local food banks for food. Chief Administrative Officer Meighan Wark said staff would prepare a report on the issue, asking for a financial report from the centre, and report back to council. County to investigate food bank funding A tight one On Aug. 11, the Wingham Hitmen took on the Monkton Muskrats in afternoon Huron County Fastball League action in Wingham. It was a tight game, but in the end it was the Hitmen who prevailed by a score of 4-2. The win helped propel Wingham to the top of the league, just ahead of the Brussels Tigers, with a record of 14-2. The Tigers are 14-3, so while the two teams are tied with 28 points, the Hitmen still have a game in hand.
