Great week at TransCan according to McDonald
It has been a week of great
weather around our area and a much
needed rain finally fell in the night
on Sunday. Around the area, a hard
rain surrounded the Brussels/Walton
area on Friday night, with Walton
getting very little.
But it was a great week for the
Walton Raceway and the annual
TransCan. Sunny, warm weather
with low humidity and a couple of
small rains made for a wonderful
week.
The amateur races from Tuesday
until Friday night went well with
racers attending from all across
Canada and the United States.
Eleven racers and their families flew
in from British Columbia, while
their bikes and gear arrived by
transport. Other families drove
motorhomes from British Columbia,
Alberta, Manitoba, Northern
Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, as
well as New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan
and New York in the U.S. There
were nearly 600 entries for the week,
all excited about the natural terrain
track of Walton and hoping to be
winners. There were a lot of
spectators most every day with a
fantastic turnout on Saturday for the
Grand National Pro Race and the
crowning of the new King of
Walton.
The Walton Raceway is working
hard to make it an enjoyable week
for the racers and their families.
They have kids camps for the young
kids between the ages of four and six
in the morning and it was well
attended with 15 and 20 kids
enjoying the morning with the
counsellors. Track building, slider
racers and scavengers hunts were all
held for the kids as well after the
racing day was over. A new trading
card program had the kids visiting
the many vendors to try and get the
20-card collection and then trade for
cards with others. For the older
youth, seminars were held at night.
There were lots of food vendors
with choices of food, snacks, drinks
and candy. Saturday saw a bouncy
castle, slide and water paddle boats
to entertain the young ones and to
make it an enjoyable event for the
family. Lots of positive comments
were heard from both those staying
the week and for those attending on
the busy Saturday. Congrats to the
Lees for a great and successful event
in 2019!
Our sympathies are extended to
the Pryce family on the passing of
Naomi Pryce. She will be missed by
children Yvonne Hoggart, Murray,
Brenda Linton, Brian, Elizabeth
Jenkin, Wayne, Blaine and Lorrie
Cataford and their families. Our
condolences to all.
A retirement party was held at the
Walton Hall on Saturday afternoon
to celebrate the retirement of Donna
McClure from her working career.
She worked in Hensall for Cook’s,
then came to Walton for Cook’s,
which became P & H and then went
to Millstone in Blyth; about a 30-
year career in office work for the
farm-oriented businesses. A nice
gathering of family, friends and
business colleagues attended the
afternoon affair. Congratulations to
Donna and we hope she enjoys her
retirement.
A retirement celebration was also
held at the Walton Inn on Sunday
afternoon for Graeme and Helen
Craig as they have sold the business
and the new owners take over on
Saturday, Aug. 24. An open
invitation to friends, customers and
family members was extended
Sunday afternoon and organized by
friends. Cake, coffee and punch
were on the menu for the many who
arrived. They were presented with a
few gifts from friends such as a
whistle for Helen, so she can call
Graeme when he is needed, and for
Graeme a square block of wood, so
he can be honest when he says he
walked around the “block” and a
small wooden slingshot gun, so he
can keep busy shooting the flies.
Stories and many laughs were
enjoyed and even a song by Graeme
and Jason Lamont was enjoyed.
They began their restaurant career
in 1997 with Grace and Debbie
Campbell as their head cook and
waitress. They worked for many
years, followed by Julie
Greidanus, Jennifer Grummett,
Dawn Marciccio, Barb Durrell,
Linda McAdam, Carol Gross,
Christine Benke, Joyce Marciccio,
Brenda Finlayson, Betty Riley,
Marlene Little and Jackie Horseman.

A 24-year-old from California is
facing a number of criminal charges
and two passengers were sent to
hospital with serious injuries
following an all-terrain vehicle
(ATV) crash that took place over the
weekend.
On Aug. 17 at approximately 9:12
p.m. Huron County Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP) officers
responded to a campground and
raceway located on Walton Road to
investigate an ATV side-by-side roll-
over.
The subsequent investigation
revealed the accused had taken the
involved ATV without permission
and had two passengers on board
when the incident occurred. OPP
say the accused took an aggressive
turn which resulted in the
subsequent loss of control and
rollover of the vehicle. The two
adult passengers were thrown from
the machine which resulted in them
both sustaining serious but non-life
threatening injuries.
While speaking with the driver,
the investigating officer noted the
driver had been consuming some
alcohol. A roadside screening test
was conducted and the driver
registered a fail. He was arrested and
transported to the Exeter OPP
Detachment for further tests. Both of
his samples provided to the
intoxilizer technician were found to
be over the legal limit.
A 24-year-old California man has
been charged with Operation While
Impaired Causing Bodily Harm (two
counts), Dangerous Operation
Causing Bodily Harm (two counts)
and Take Motor Vehicle Without
Consent.
He remained in custody with a

The Branch was involved in a
social bingo at the Walton TransCan
last week with all the prizes donated
by the trade companies. The kids
had a great time and were excited to
get a prize associated with racing
like goggles, tires, gloves,
etc. Celebrity racers were the
callers.
It was a fun night with Andy and
Erin Overholt and Catrina Josling
doing the set-up and take down.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of over 60 to enjoy the
music of the Country Versatiles. The
usual ladies of Judy, Jo-Ann, Mabel
and Mary, with Catrina bartending
made the evening event fun.

PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
Quite the crowd
Walton Raceway’s owner Brett Lee said this year’s Walton TransCan featured a new kind of
buzz as fans really bought in to the event. Some fans really put the “fan” in fanatic, modifying
chainsaws to rev as their favourite riders passed by and using coloured smoke bombs to
celebrate their victories. From an increased number of camping site passes purchased to
thousands of visitors making their way to Walton and the raceway over the weekend, Lee said
everything pointed to a successful weekend. (Denny Scott photo)
