Blyth gate approved
Jacklin claims national gold
Blyth slo-pitch team claims tournament bronze
F.E. Madill School athlete Ryan
Jacklin has proved, once again, that
he is best in the country, earning
three gold medals and setting a new
national record at the National Track
and Field Championships in Sydney,
Nova Scotia, last week.
Jacklin brought home gold in the
hammer throw, shot put and discus
events at the national competition,
and, with a throw of 69.59 metres in
the five-kilogram hammer throw, set
a new national under-18 record.
The 17-year-old has had his work
cut out for him this year, fighting
injuries and fitting in training around
a masonry trade, but he has still
made it work, building on the two
gold medals at the 2018 Legion
Youth National Track and Field
Championships last year (discus and
hammer throw) as well as a bronze.
Jacklin has also captured gold at
the U18 Jamaican Invitational track
and field meet last year.
Jacklin competes out of the
Saugeen Track and Field Club,
having come to the throwing sports
after a hockey injury sidelined his
high-jump aspirations.
The injury forced him to try new
events, and he found that he had a
natural aptitude for the throwing
events.
In his first season, he was earning
awards and competing at the same
level as dedicated Ontario
Federation of School Athletic
Association (OFSAA) athletes.
Nearly $6,000 will be taken from
the Blyth Memorial Living Tree
Fund to help bankroll modifications
to the arena in the Blyth and District
Community Service.
North Huron Township Council
approved the disbursement of funds
during its Aug. 12 meeting, which
will cover the cost of a radius gate at
the southeast corner of the Blyth and
District Community Centre’s ice
surface to accommodate the easy
installation and removal of a wall
that splits the ice in half.
Director of Recreation and
Community Services Vicky Lutten-
berger said that, last year Hockey
Canada mandated the use of such a
wall so different levels of lower-
level hockey programs could be held
at the same time on the ice.
“To implement the program,
The Blyth over-55 slo-pitch team
claimed bronze in the Southwest
Regional Senior Games hosted by
the Grey Bruce District of the
Ontario Senior Games Association
of Ontario earlier this month.
The team posted two wins and a
loss in the one-day tournament, held
Aug. 14, earning the bronze finish.
The squad faced off against the
London A Team early in the
tournament and were edged out 11-
8.
In extra innings, the Blyth squad
posted an 11-8 win over Guelph,
earning the squad a berth in the ‘B’
finals against another London squad.
Blyth captured the B Championship
and bronze with a 16-7 win.
This was the first time that a rural
community has hosted the
Southwest Regional Games, held by
the Ontario Senior Games
Association (OSGA 55+) which are
traditionally hosted by urban
municipalities.
Aside from slo-pitch, the event
includes billiards, bocce ball, bridge,
carpet bowling, cribbage, crokinole,
cycling, darts, euchre, golf,
horseshoes, ladder golf, lawn
bowling, pickle ball, scrabble,
shuffleboard, swimming and tennis.
The events were held in and around
Mildmay, including sites in Paisley,
Walkerton, Hanover, Cargill and
Chelsey.

OSGA 55+ on Facebook.
