By Jo-Ann McDonald The Brussels Legion Branch has been busy presenting cheques to various organizations for community betterment. The funds are from the successful Catch the Ace draw and the Branch is sharing. Each organization has received $500 for their projects. Brussels Horticultural Society President Marie McCutcheon received that organization’s cheque and reports it will be used for the butterfly garden at the conservation area they are revamping. Brussels Agricultural Society President Dorothy Cummings received the society’s cheque and reports it will go towards an activity at the Brussels Fall Fair such as the face painting group for the children. The Brussels Lions Club President Bob Kellington received the club’s money and reports it will go towards the Lions Pool and any work needed there. The Brussels Leo Club’s money is being directed to the Maitland Conservation Area playground and was accepted by Leo Justin Morrison and Lions representative Zoey Onn. Brussels Santa Claus parade group representative Deb Seili received that group’s money and said it may go to a little refurbishing of Santa’s sleigh. The Brussels Girl Guides, Pathfinders, Brownies and Sparks leader Andrea Van Nes reports their money will be used for a special event for the girls’ group. There are still a few donations to make and the new Catch the Ace draw will begin Sept. 20. We thank everyone for their support from the last draw and are excited about A big “hello” from Jean Bewley. I forgot to pass that on last week. She lives at “The Station” in Airdrie, Alberta and like when she lived here, she has made friends who enjoy fun and a few games. Her daughter Brenda lives there so she gets to watch the next generations grow. Moving briskly along in her 90s, she’s always interested in what’s happening in our community whenever we stop by on the Alberta roads. So consider yourself greeted from Jean. We had Emerson come to call. This was a fourth-month-old Emerson, not the Mitchell type. We’re still getting used to this Emerson Marks, who has quickly made a name for himself in the Watson Line. Watching babies grow is such a joy and gives hope to every day. We took our turn last week at the United Church hospitality booth. What fun chatting to folks we don’t often see and meeting new people visiting as they leisurely enjoy a little refreshment after they’ve wandered the vendors and made their purchases. Several new tables were there with unique food and gift items. It seems it’s the place to be on Friday with a good chance for you to see and eat the many good things available in Ontario. I hope you’ve been to the pool a few times this summer. The Lions Club subsidized the fees and the staff are excellent, all for our benefit. August is moving along, so only a couple of weeks left. Adult swim/exercise is at 1 p.m. each weekday, so join the fun and get your body moving. Everybody wins. Visit a friend, it will do you both good. Bye now, Betty G.W. (Photo submitted) The Brussels Leo Club won’t be getting any financial support from Morris-Turnberry in the youth club’s drive to upgrade parks in its village. The club’s Lions representative Zoey Onn wrote to Morris- Turnberry Council requesting financial support for its long-term fundraising campaign. Chief Administrative Officer Trevor Hallam explained the request wasn’t in the budget, so council would have to decide how it wanted to proceed. Deputy-Mayor Sharen Zinn, however, said that council had already set a policy in place regarding such requests. “We decided a while back we weren’t going to donate to these projects because it’s taxpayer money and they can donate on their own,” she said. “Maybe they won’t use the park or the equipment. We felt, at one time, that this was an individual [issue] instead of being through council.” Councillor Jim Nelemans agreed, but said there should be a form letter to respond to such requests, saying the project is a worthwhile one, but council doesn’t donate to such projects with tax dollars. The discussion resulted in Hallam asking whether such donation requests should be brought to council at all or if he should just respond with the form letter. Mayor Jamie Heffer said that council has put a moratorium on donations, similar to Huron County, because the impetus for supporting issues isn’t on tax dollars but individual decisions. Council decided to revisit the issue of donations in general near budget time.
