Festival to produce Huron ‘Christmas Carol’

to the heart of sensitivity of His
nervous system. Yet He chose to
undergo such pain in order that you
and I might be forgiven and brought
to a Holy God, cleansed sinners
reclaimed from hellfire. “When they
hurled their insults at Him, He did
not retaliate; when He suffered, he
made no threats. Instead, He
entrusted Himself to Him who
judges justly. He himself bore our
sins in His body on the tree, so that
we might die to sins and live for
righteousness; by His wounds you
have been healed.” (1Peter 2:23-24)
The burn pile mishap was a close
call for me. Thankfully, my wounds
are healing up; His wounds – heal
others... to save us from eternal
flames. (c.f. Mark 9:48)
The Blyth Festival will be
producing A Huron County
Christmas Carol this holiday season,
an all-new take on Charles Dickens’
seminal work.
Penned by Blyth Festival Artistic
Director Gil Garratt, the play will
feature music by Holmesville
musician John Powers. The play
will run Nov. 28 to Dec. 22.
Garratt said it will be a
classic Blyth Festival production
featuring musicians and actors,
and he feels it’s going to be great.
Dickens’ Victorian-era piece will
be transformed to a contemporary
Huron County piece, Garratt
explained, with Ebenezer Scrooge’s
character becoming a feed mill
magnate.
“He’s trying to buy up all the feed
mills,” Garratt said, complete with
some “empire building”.
Scrooge will be an analogue for
Dickens’ version of the covetous
character, Garratt said, and his
nephew will be an organic farmer
who invites Scrooge to dinner.
Keeping in line with the original
text, Scrooge’s employee Bob
Cratchit’s son will be ill, and
Scrooge will offer him a half day off
for Christmas to spend with his
family, prompting Scrooge to be
visited by the three ghosts of
Christmas: past, present and future.
Looking back, Scrooge
remembers how he met the love of
his life at a CKNX Barn Dance
before his covetous lifestyle drove
her away. His recent history will be
detailed by the Ghost of Christmas
present and, when given a
glimpse of his future, Scrooge
will end up looking at how his life
leads him to Blyth’s Cemetery Line.
“From there, we will see what
happens,” Garratt said of the show
which is still in development.
Garratt also said he has been
discussing the play with local
churches, the Blyth Legion and the
Blyth Legion Ladies Auxiliary and
hopes to have country suppers
throughout the run, similar to the
Festival’s summer season.
“We’re looking to make this a new
holiday tradition,” Garratt said.
“People can see the show and have
dinner.”
Tickets are available for the show
now through the Blyth Festival box
office at 1-877-862-5984 or
blythfestival.com. An early bird
discount is available until Sept. 28
when the Festival’s current summer
programming ends.

Right around the corner
It might be depressing to say, but snow and the holiday season in Huron County are right
around the corner, which is why the Blyth Festival is in the midst of preparing work on A Huron
County Christmas Carol this November and December. Festival General Manager Rachael
King, right, made the announcement Friday night at the Blyth Festival Art Gallery opening,
adding that another gallery show would be held during the holiday show’s run. (Denny Scott photo)
