‘Ride With Me’ mental health fundraiser scheduled
The Tanner Ward Foundation,
Racing for Mental Health alongside
the Tanner Steffler Foundation and
the Walton Raceway, is hosting a
cycling fundraiser later this month to
raise awareness for mental health
issues and suicide prevention.
The event, called Ride with Me,
will see participants travel from the
Walton Raceway to Blyth Cowbell
Brewing Company and back
again, marking a 28-kilometre
round trip. The event is set for Aug.
16.
The ride starts at 11 a.m. at the
Walton Raceway’s Gate A (42852
Walton Road). Cyclists will arrive at
Cowbell at noon where a
complimentary lunch will be
provided in Cowbell’s Thresher’s
Hall, sponsored by UNIFOR Local
636. An hour later at 1 p.m. cyclists
will be back on the road towards
Walton.
The event will also feature a silent
auction to raise funds for the
involved organizations.
The Tanner Ward Foundation,
Racing for Mental Health was
started by professional motocross
racer Tanner Ward, who lost his
oldest brother Jeff to suicide.
Ward, in a post on his foundation’s
Facebook page, explains that he has
learned a lot since losing his brother,
and didn’t know how pervasive
mental health problems are in
society.
The Tanner Steffler Foundation
was created in memory of Tanner
Steffler by his parents John and
Heather after they lost their son to
mental health and substance use
disorder.
The foundation seeks to, among
other goals, raise awareness and
make services and facilities available
to those in Huron facing mental
health and substance abuse
problems.

Foundation and Racing for Mental
Wellness on Facebook.

Push!
As part of the second annual Six String Music Festival presented by the Tanner Steffler
Foundation, an emergency services vehicle push was held at the Seaforth Agriplex. The event
was held on Saturday and featured activities and music for all ages. Above, local teams of
EMS personnel put their differences aside to push one of the Huron East Fire Department’s
fire trucks. (Denny Scott photo)

It has been another week of
grandchildren and a change of
routine around this house. The four
oldest grandchildren went to Little
Bugs Camp at Edge of Walton,
which left grandma with just two
little ones. When the others returned,
they were tired little people. They
were excited about all the things
they learned, and did, and were
proud as punch of their
accomplishments.
They played water games, other
camp games, did the low ropes
course, caught frogs, learned to
identify bugs, did bike riding, crafts
and lots of other activities. They
even had the opportunity to see the
Stanley Cup and Ryan O’Reilly
parade. They bused almost 25
students to the parade. There they
held hands while they marched to a
reserved roped off area, where they
were surrounded by the camp
councillors. Well organized and all
very well done, it was a wonderful
week for the kids and they were
thrilled with all they experienced at
Little Bugs Camp at Walton.
Congratulations to Paul and
Carolyn Somerville on the birth of a
fourth granddaughter. New parents
are Brad and Kristi Somerville of
Grande Prairie. They have
welcomed a beautiful little girl they
have named Kenzie.
Congratulations to the new
parents.
The weather has been good and so
some farmers have started into the
wheat harvest. The reports so far
have been good and the quantity
good. Lots of straw as well.
Heading away for a week’s
vacation were local folks Matt and
Julie Shortreed, Anthony and Katie
DeBoer, Matt and Malory Elliott and
Jeremy Phelan and Sarah Phelan
McKay. The first six drove to
Nashville, Tennessee and the
Phelans flew from Toronto to meet
them. They enjoyed the Grand Ole
Opry, a river boat cruise, touring the
Broadway strip, and a bus tour of the
homes of the rich and famous. On
the way home, the six stopped in
Detroit to enjoy the Tigers versus the
Blue Jays game. Great time among
friends for all.
There were 15 students from 14
countries visiting this area during
July through the Lions Club Youth
exchange program. Students and
their hosts visited the Boettcher
sheep farm and also the Boettcher
milking goat farm on July 25. They
were then welcomed to the farm of
John and Pat Gillis for a barbecue
and a last get-together before flying
home on the weekend.
They hailed from Belgium, Czech
Republic, Finland, France,
Germany, Italy, Mexico,
Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain,
Slovakia, Taiwan and Turkey. They
all enjoyed their host families, sight-
seeing opportunities, youth camp
and shopping trips and time to form
new friendships. All were sad to
leave their new friends and the Lions
wished them well.
The Walton Raceway hosted a
summertime mudbog on the
weekend. The first day was for ATV/
UTV/SXS vehicles. Sunday was for
trucks and cars. There was a smaller
crowd than usual, but they enjoyed
good weather.
We hosted the Stevens family
reunion at our home on Sunday
afternoon. Everyone enjoyed a good
visit with Aunt Peg (Seaforth) and
with cousin Karen from Alberta. Our
Aunt Marg from London was also
able to attend with her son Murray
and other cousins. The group of 16
enjoyed a potluck meal and great
visit. They came from
London, Guelph and Orangeville
and area.
Celebrating birthdays to end July
are Jim Blake, Kathy Elliott, Jayne
Ross, Naomi Pryce, Sharon M.
Brown, Tina Driscoll, Dorothy
Kelly, George Townsend, Tyler
Eckert, Donna Blair, Cathy
Flaxbard, Tyler Leslie Ribey, Olene
Dennis, Sandy Huether, Paul Ryan,
Jordan Shortreed, Bridget Blake,
Jeanne Dionne and Jennifer
Grobbink. Happy birthday to all.
