The South Huron 4-H Sheep
club’s fifth meeting was held on July
25 at 6:30 p.m. Members met at the
home of leader Deb Falconer at her
Vanastra farm.
There was a slight difference
between this meeting and the
meetings so far this year. This time,
members attended the meeting with
their lambs.
As the club awaited the arrival of
special guest, Edwin Gerber, who
would be shearing the sheep,
members migrated towards the lawn
where senior members gave showing
tips and tricks to the younger
members. When Gerber arrived to
shear, the club split into two separate
groups, one to continue with show
tips and one to get their lambs
shorn.
One by one, members went and
watched as their sheep were expertly
shorn with great precision.
Meanwhile, information was
discussed regarding how to set up
your lamb for showing, what to do if
your lamb gets loose and what to
bring on show day was distributed to
attentative ears.
Once all lambs were shorn, the
club thanked Gerber formally. The
meeting continued in an unorthodox
way, by performing all of the club
office events in the second half of the
meeting rather than in the first half.
The roll call for the meeting was:
“What is the name of your sheep,
and how much do you think it
weighs?”
Once all old business was taken
care of, members discussed what to
do with the wool and how to prepare
it for judging. They covered the
importance of not putting a fleece in
plastic, along with reasons to use
special paper twins instead of baler
twine when bundling.
Florence Pullen went over what a
judge will look for when judging
wool, which includes crimp and
lanolin.
To finish up the meeting, members
overviewed the details of what to do
at the Zurich Fair, which would have
a sheep show for the first time in
many years.
The meeting closed with the 4-H
motto and members had a snack
while discussing the regional Go for
the Gold competition.
