KMM Drainage had previously
installed a side-by-side
comparison between 15-foot and
30-foot spacing in an adjacent
field belonging to HSCIA board
member and project supporter,
Rick Kootstra.
The majority of the installation
happened on Saturday, June 15.
Three hundred and fifty people
were watching, and they had come
from across Ontario, including
some from the U.S. and even
California. Attendees during the
day also included the Honourable
Ernie Hardeman, Ontario Minister
of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs, as well as other local
dignitaries.
Project partners addressed the
crowd at noon, thanking the
attendees of the field day and the
funders of the project, which
included the County of Huron,
ABCA, LICO, HSCIA and several
industry sponsors and private
donors. The project was also
funded in part through the
Canadian Agricultural Partnership
(CAP), a federal-provincial-
territorial initiative. The
Agricultural Adaptation Council
assists in the delivery of the
Partnership in Ontario.
“It is an unprecedented
partnership,” said Melisa Luymes,
Project Coordinator. “We brought
agricultural, drainage, and
environmental stakeholders
together to align on innovation and
research to improve soil and water
quality,” she said.
The field day also included an
industry trade show, a soil pit
presentation, food vendors and
workshops that were held
throughout the day.
Workshop presenters included
Kirsten Grant, a recent graduate
from the University of Waterloo
who spoke about her research on
phosphorus and tile water.
Representatives from LICO, Sid
Vander Veen and Peter Johnson,
also gave presentations, along with
OMAFRA’s Anne Verhallen and
ABCA’s Ross Wilson in the soil
pit. MacKenzie Smith and Lynne
Warriner spoke about 4R Nutrient
Stewardship and improving water
quality through improving
fertilizer placement and timing.
For Dr. Jeremy Meiners’
presentation, there was standing
room only. Meiners is with
Illinois-based company AGREM
and designed the Huronview
project. AGREM has been spear
heading drainage innovation
around the world and Jeremy and
Bob Meiners, along with their
entire family, were in Ontario for
the whole week, working on the
installation with each contractor.
“It was great working with
AGREM,” says Mike Neeb. “It
wasn’t an easy installation because
no one has ever done anything like
this. But we were excited to be part
of the project and look forward to
see what research comes out of
this site in the future.”
The drainage project was
initiated by the Huron Soil & Crop
Improvement Association
(HSCIA), which is a volunteer
board of farmers who are
passionate about improving soil
and water quality. HSCIA has a
15-year rental agreement with the
County of Huron for the
Huronview Demo Farm, to
demonstrate soil health best
practices such as cover crops and
no-till, along with erosion control.
“We knew we needed to invest in
field drainage at Huronview in
order to control erosion and we
took this opportunity to try the
most innovative system out there,”
said Doug Walker, President of
HSCIA. “By partnering with
Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority (ABCA), we’re able to
use it for research.”
This research will benefit the
environment, along with the
drainage and agricultural industry.
It was quite a sight, and all are
welcome to visit at 77722 London
Road, just south of Clinton.

OPP investigating
commercial B&E
Huron County OPP officers are
investigating a recent break, enter
and theft occurrence that took place
in the Town of Goderich.
Sometime between 11 a.m. on
Saturday, July 20 and 9 a.m. on
Sunday, July 21, someone entered a
commercial property located on
Anglesea Street in Goderich.
Once inside the multi-unit
building, the perpetrator forced entry
into a business whereupon the
suspect stole electronics and
business documents.
The following electronic items
have been reported stolen:
• A black ASUS laptop
• A full-sized iPad with a soft pink
case
• An iPad mini with a grey case
The total value of the stolen items
has yet to be established.
STOLEN BOAT RECOVERED
A pontoon boat, engine and trailer
package valued at nearly $105,000
has been recovered and three
accused are now facing charges
thanks to a call from an observant
witness.
On Thursday, July 18, shortly
before 10 p.m., Huron County OPP
officers received a call from a
witness who reported some
suspicious activity taking place at a
marine retail and service centre
located on Bluewater Veteran’s
Highway north of Grand Bend. The
caller reported he observed some
suspicious people hooking onto a
trailer and pontoon boat after-hours
at the business, so he confronted
them.
Upon confronting the suspects
they quickly departed the business
towing the boat and trailer
northbound on Bluewater Veteran’s
Highway. Simultaneously officers
began patrolling for the suspect
vehicle. A short while later, an OPP
officer spotted the suspect vehicle
and pontoon boat pulled over on
Dashwood Road.
Subsequent investigation
confirmed the pontoon boat and
trailer were in fact just stolen from
the business. As a result, the
investigating officer arrested three
suspects at the scene.
A 34-year-old Mount Albert
resident has been charged with
Break, Enter and Commit an
Indictable Offence, Possession of
Property Obtained by Crime Over
$5,000 and Disobey Court Order. He
remains in custody with a court
appearance scheduled for July 23,
2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice
in Goderich.
A 57-year-old female and 64-year-
old male, both from Mount Albert,
have been charged with Break, Enter
and Commit an Indictable Offence
and Possession of Property Obtained
by Crime Over $5,000. They were
both released from custody with a
court appearance scheduled for Aug.
26, at the Ontario Court of Justice in
Goderich.
Any person with information
regarding these incidents is asked to
contact Huron OPP at 1-888-310-
1122 or (519) 524-8314.
Should you wish to remain
anonymous, you may call Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Visionary
Contoured drainage, a new on-demand way to control moisture for farmers, was a hot topic at
the Huron Soil & Crop Improvement Association’s drainage demonstration day earlier this
year. Peter Johnson, bottom right, explains the system during the event. (Quinn Talbot photo)
