The Citizen, 2019-08-01, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 2019. The Brussels Tigers captured the A championship in the 48th annual men’s invitational fastball tournament over the weekend with a 12-0 win over the Appin A’s. The Tigers went through the tournament undefeated, starting the three-game round-robin with a convincing 12-5 win over the Monkton Muskrats on Friday night. The Tigers were in the ‘C’ division against three other teams. The Tigers then went on to double the Delaware Highlanders 10-5 before blanking their closest competition in the standings, the Kitchener Selects, 7-0. The sweep of the round robin earned Brussels a bye to the finals on Sunday, where they faced off against the Appin A’s who swept the ‘A’ round-robin, starting on Saturday morning by doubling the Walton Brewers 6-3. Later that day, the A’s edged out the Goderich Grizzlies 10-7, earning the A’s a berth in the semi-finals against the Glencoe Astros, who swept the ‘B’ round-robin. Appin outscored Glencoe by 10, earning a 12-2 win on Sunday morning before facing off against the Tigers Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Tigers representative Shawn Daw said that, from an organizing standpoint, the tournament went very well. “We had lots of community support,” he said. “There were lots of people out watching our games and lots of people out watching the tournament in general.” He said the beverage tent was successful and that the decision to add a food truck through JR’s Cooking and Catering of Walkerton was a great pairing. The Brussels Leo Club will return all the empties from the weekend, adding to their fundraising efforts, Daw said. The event couldn’t happen, said Daw, without the other teams taking part, the umpires keeping the games going, help from members of the Tigers, volunteers who help behind the scenes and commercial partners. The Tigers’ win marks the third time in four seasons they’ve come out on top at their own tournament, Daw said, with wins in 2016, 2018 and now 2019. He said the team’s offence was performing well, with the team earning 41 runs and giving up only 10 throughout the tournament, a ratio of four runs earned to every one scored against them. The pitching staff, which Daw is a part of, also played a big part in the win, he said.
