Parking lots not to be paved
Despite some discussion that left
the possibility open, Huron East
Council has opted to leave their
municipal parking lots in Brussels as
they are for the time being.
Council discussed the issue at its
July 16 meeting, defeating a motion
that had been tabled at the July 2
meeting, instead passing another
motion that defers the paving of one
lot and leaves the paving of a second
conditional on the paving of the
Brussels Four Winds Barn parking
lot.
Public Works Co-ordinator Barry
Mills made the recommendation,
saying that he felt it was best that
council defer the paving of the
Elizabeth Street parking lot (near the
village’s car wash) until the Four
Winds Barn lot is paved. Council
would then authorize the paving of
the lot if the Four Winds lot is paved.
Mills also recommended deferral
of paving of the Richmond Square
lot (beside the LCBO) indefinitely,
but suggested enhancing the signage
at the lot and then monitor its usage.
The motion that council defeated
stated that council would seek to
pave both lots.
Mills’ report states that the
Elizabeth Street lot could be paved
for just under $13,000 with site
preparation being done by municipal
staff. That pricing, however, is
conditional on the Four Winds lot
being paved at the same time, which
Mills said Four Winds owner Bryan
Morton has indicated he plans
to do (it also complies with his site
plan).
Mills said that paving either of the
lots was not budgeted for, but that
there is a budget allowance of
$30,000 for pavement maintenance.
He suggested that any funds used in
Brussels could come from that
account.
Council passed the motion to
leave the lots unpaved for the time
being, agreeing with Mills’
recommendation.

Blyth Cowbell Brewing Co. is
pleased to announce it is partnering
with Chefs with Hart for two
fundraising events to benefit the
GIFT (Group for Improvement of
Intestinal Function and Treatment)
program at Sick Kids Hospital.
Chefs with Hart was inspired by
Hartley Bernier, a 10-year-old living
with a rare and serious illness called
intestinal failure. Since his initial
diagnosis, Hart has had more than
20 operations, spends 14-16 hours a
day on an IV and must consume
more than 4,000 calories to continue
thriving.
He, along with his brothers
Hudson and Sully are Sick Kids
ambassadors and actively promote
and fundraise for Sick Kids Hospital
in Toronto. Together with their
parents, Daniel and Ashley, they
formed Chefs with Hart.
Prior to the GIFT program’s
inception in 2002, children like
Hartley only had a 30 per cent
chance of living past three years old.
Since then, the group has worked
hard to make a difference for
families dealing with some of the
rarest, and most complex illnesses
seen in hospitals today. Children
with intestinal failure previously
experienced 40-80 per cent mortality
rates, and with the GIFT program,
those rates have been reduced to five
per cent. The GIFT program at Sick
Kids is the only program of its kind
in Canada.
Chefs with Hart creates culinary
events with chefs from across
Ontario to bring awareness to
intestinal failure in children and
raise funds for the GIFT program.
To date, Hartley, Hudson and Sully
have raised almost $60,000 for the
GIFT program and have been
awarded the 2019 Impact Award
from the SickKids Foundation and
the WE Foundation.
“As a family, we are very excited
to be putting on an event involving
so many incredible chefs, and we are
beyond grateful to do it with such a
generous partner as Cowbell
Brewing,” said Daniel Bernier. “The
boy’s grandparents make their home
in Huron County, and we are excited
to host many friends and family
from the Huron-Perth area in Blyth.”
Cowbell is proud to partner with
Chefs with Hart on two events
including one at the Cowbell Farm
on July 29, and the other in
Newmarket on Aug. 11.
“We are thrilled to be partnering
with Chef with Hart, a Greener
Pastures Champion,” said Alecia
Anderson, Director of Community
Engagement at Cowbell Brewing.
“The boys’ enthusiasm is infectious
and their commitment to being
advocates for Sick Kids is
inspiring”.
The tapas-style dinner at the
Cowbell Farm will feature dishes
created by talented chefs from
Stratford and Toronto, including:
Kris Schlotzhauer (AO Pasta), Scott
Vivian (Beast), Rossy Earle
(Toronto Blue Jays team chef),
Dusty Gallagher (416 Snackbar),
Jordan Carr (Harris Electric Eatery),
Matthew Ravenscroft (Rosalinda),
Charlotte Langley (Scout Canning),
Ryan O’Donnell (Mercer), Jamie
Crosby (The Prune) and Yva Santini
(Pazzo).
A second tapas-style dinner will
be hosted at Eventmrkt in
Newmarket on Aug. 11, featuring
dishes from: Braeden Knight
(Ground Burger Bar), Nathan
Middleton (Petty Cash), Felicia
Derose (Plantaburger / The Chase),
Shahir Massoud (Guest Chef on The
Marilyn Denis Show), Conor Joerin
(Sugo), Leo Baldassare (Famiglia
Baldassare), Hans Vogels
(Momofuku), Steve Gonzalez (Baro/
Petty Cash) and Rossy Earle
(Toronto Blue Jays team chef).
