Stromes celebrate birthdays with ‘Moncrieff 100’
We have week one of grand-
parenting over and we are now into
week two. What a difference around
the house with three extra little ones.
What to eat, how to entertain, time to
nap, time to get up, need a snack, can
we go outside, play with me! Busy,
busy, busy.
At least farming has come to a
slow down right now, but not the
growth. Corn is shooting up with this
heat and soybean rows are filling in
nicely. It will not be long and the
wheat will be ready.
A celebration I missed reporting
on was the “Moncrieff 100”. It was
the celebration of both Ron and Kim
Strome’s “50th” birthdays. They
held a party for family, friends and
neighbours to celebrate the special
milestone in their lives.
A correction on the spelling of a
name in the Zwep motorcycle trip
with the crew of seven other riders. I
misspelled Henk Pardy’s name and
now we can tell you a bit about the
trip. The group crossed into the U.S.
through Fort Erie.
The seven-day journey took them
through the northeastern states of
New York, Pennsylvania, New
Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.
They went all the way to the Atlantic
Ocean and touched the water, just to
say they have done that, before
starting their way back. They
crossed over in Gananoque and
headed home travelling approx-
imately 3,400 kilometres.
The group saw such amazing sites
while travelling on some very scenic
roads. They had great weather and
great company was enjoyed by all.
Last Friday evening was the
wedding of Melissa Glanville and
Jordan Brand. The ceremony was
held in the bush at the home of the
bride’s parents, Robert and Jackie
Glanville. The rain held off and the
dinner and reception were held in
Zurich. It was a smaller, intimate
affair with just over 100 guests
celebrating with the happy couple.
Big sister Joelle travelled from
Alberta with her partner to be the
maid of honour for Melissa. It was a
lovely day and congratulations to the
newlyweds who now live in Zurich.

PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
Edge of Walton sport camp was fun and informative
Last week was the sports camp
held at the Edge of Walton facility.
There were 72 attendees at the camp
to keep the six councillors, seven
junior councillors and facility
manager on their collective toes.
The kids enjoyed dirt bike riding,
fishing, high rope climbing,
kayaking, canoeing, team games,
trail bike riding, rugby and more.
They had assistance from St. Anne’s
Catholic Secondary School rugby
personnel to teach them about rugby.
They also had an Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority represen-
tative teaching them about local
species of plants and animals.
The week culminated on Friday
afternoon with special guests and
presentations. It was a special
expression of love and sharing by
the Blake family in memory of
Mitch Blake, read by mother
Michelle. Mitch passed away a year
ago in May.
When you lose a loved one, you
fear the loss of memories and
forgetting their favourite things and
who they were. Walton Raceway
holds special memories for many of
our local youth. We are grateful for
the opportunity to share this special
story and for the 72 campers who
will now carry the memory of
someone most have never met, but
72 opportunities to carry his
memory to all. Memories of Mitch
were shared with them about his
love of sports and dirt bikes, the
track and motocross, and his
favourite purple motocross shirt.
He spent a lot of time at the track,
whether it was practising, racing or
picking garbage for minor hockey.
The family wanted to recognize
Mitch’s love of sports and motocross
and presented all 72 campers, plus
staff, with his favourite replicated
vintage purple TransCan shirt, a
symbol of who Mitch was. The shirt
featured a rider and bike with plate
number 94 TransCan on the front
and the back had his name, signature
and a rider and bike with logo
“Learn to Ride” July 18, 2019 on it.
They were presented the shirts as the
councillors read out their names and
what their most important
achievement or accomplishment was
at the camp. There were 16 members
of the Blake/McCutcheon family on
hand for the presentations.
Ed McClure celebrated another
birthday and his so called “friends”
marked the occasion with, of course,
“toilet paper” decorations. Ed awoke
to find his trees in the yard sporting
new white foliage. Happy birthday
Ed!
Two weddings took place on
Saturday. One was in Grand Bend at
the Dark Horse Winery. The groom
is the son of Scott and Lori (Moore)
Wheeler of B.C. Their son Ben wed
Danica, also from B.C., in a lovely
intimate ceremony in front of family
and a few friends. The entire
Wheeler family travelled here
including sons MacKenzie and
Mitch of B.C. and Nicholas of
Georgia for the festivities. Many of
the local Wheeler/ Moore families
also attended. Following the dinner,
they went to a cottage on the beach
to celebrate for the evening.
Congratulations to the newlyweds.
The second wedding of the day
was the nuptials of Abby McGavin
and Jeff Gordon. It was a beautiful
outdoor wedding on the property of
parents Brian and Shelley McGavin.
The dinner and reception were held
in the shed for the nearly 200 guests.
The speeches had just began,
following dinner, when the rain hit,
but it did not dampen the happy
atmosphere inside. There were
beautiful decorations and the
bridesmaids had lovely champagne-
coloured dresses.
The couple had their first dance
outside under the lights. The lovely
voice of cousin Amanda McClure
and singing partner Tom Burke,
serenaded the guests during the
wedding and during the cocktail
hour. Congratulations to the
happy couple, who are living in
Seaforth.
We now have Rick’s sister Karin
here for a visit. She is staying at
brother Neil’s place in Bayfield, but
will be out and about seeing many
old friends and relatives. We
celebrated our LeeAnn’s 40th
birthday and Karin’s 68th birthday
on Sunday with a family gathering.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week includes Barry Young, Steve
Baan, Gary Godkin, LeeAnn Ellis,
Paul Somerville, Lloyd Glanville,
Kristen Curreri, Dianne Flood,
Sharon Godkin Patterson, Sherry
McCall, Corrina Strong, Ken
Williamson, Sandra Brown,
Christopher Ritchie, Curtis Ryan,
Andrew Van Vliet, Anne
Williamson, Karin McDonald,
Michael Warwick, Bradley Fraser,
Laura Godkin, Alivia McCall
MacBain, Charles Gulutzen and
Lanette Todd. Happy birthday to
all.

NEWS
FROM WALTON
I caught a salamander!
The Edge of Walton’s sport camp featured plenty of unique
experiences, like climbing, dirt biking, cycling and even
interacting with nature. Above, just prior to shouts
celebrating their catching of a salamander, are, from left:
Blaise Emerson, Jaxson Folkes-Smith and Rowen Overholt.
