As of July 8, Huron County
residents were again able to access
materials from library systems
across the province.
The service was temporarily shut
down after the provincial
government cut the Southern
Ontario Library Service (SOLS)
operating budget by 50 per cent.
This led to the elimination of their
van delivery service used to move
materials between library systems
across the province.
On May 31, it was announced that
SOLS would allocate $340,000 to
assist with the cost of a new model
which utilizes Canada Post to mail
books between libraries. This level
of funding is insufficient to
compensate for the volume of
materials that was previously shared
and does not account for the
additional staff time required to
individually package and process
each item, according to Huron
County Librarian and Director of
Cultural Services, Beth Rumble.
Due to these costs, the service will
operate on a reduced scale until a
more accurate picture of actual costs
can be determined.
The Huron County Library can
only control what they allow
borrowers to request and what they
lend to other library systems. The
integrity of the system will rely on
other libraries also continuing to
support interlibrary loan, she said.
“We are eager to get our
interlibrary loan system back up and
running to give Huron County
residents access to a province’s
worth of materials,” says Rumble.
“At this point, some uncertainty
remains surrounding the total costs
of the program but we are
committed to providing this valuable
service to our users.”
The Huron County Library will
also explore if it would be
advantageous to negotiate
agreements with neighbouring
library systems to exchange
materials utilizing the library van
that transports materials within the
county.

Loan program returns
Remembering
It was that time of year again as the volunteers behind Ball’s Cemetery near Auburn held their
annual decoration service at the chapel. In addition to the special service, the Goderich
Harbouraires performed a series of musical numbers to the packed house earlier this month.
