There has been so much heat and no rain, which has made things very dry across our area. Even the corn is showing some signs of distress; the leaves are curling into themselves. A couple of days called for rain, dark clouds formed and then the sun came out again. The north had a heavy rain, Seaforth had a heavy rain, but there was no rain in Walton. Then the cold front moved in and what a change! It was time for sweaters and for long pants; turn off the air conditioners; open the windows and put an extra blanket on the bed. Ontario weather can change quite quickly! The McGavin family gathered for the first of two weddings in their families. Brent Melady, son of Pat and Cathy (McGavin) Melady , and Shawna Regier were married in a small intimate wedding at the Dublin Church. The dinner and reception was held at the farm of Pat and Cathy. Following the dinner, an informal evening of visiting and mingling of the guests was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to the newlyweds. A lovely wedding was held on Moncrieff Road on Saturday evening when John Van Vliet and Deirdre Kirlin were united in marriage. Close to 100 guests witnessed the special event held on the Van Vliet farm. The bride and groom walked to the area for the ceremony with man’s best friends, their two dogs. John’s son Andrew was his father’s best man and Dee was attended by her sister and friend. An open reception for the many friends and extended family members, neighbours and work associates followed. A unique late lunch was handmade pizza served hot from the wood-fired pizza oven on site. Delicious! Congratulations to the happy couple on Moncrieff Road. A group of eight men began their annual motorcycle trip and this time they headed to the eastern U.S. Heading out for their five-day adventure were George and Harry Zwep, Ray Rammeloo, Albert Roetcisoender, Felix Weber, Felix Weber Jr., Henk Paradis and Lucas Weber. We will have an account of their adventures for next week, as it has been a busy weekend for us. The Walton Brewers were part of the Seaforth Centenaires Men’s steak night, held last week. The event featured grilling your own steak, beer tent, games of strength and agility and the Walton Brewers against the Fullarton A’s. Walton was victorious and nearly 150 men enjoyed the evening. There were many Walton area men who found many old friends to visit with during the evening. A group of four Walton ladies had an enjoyable evening together while the men were away. Jo-Ann McDonald, Marni Knight, Judy Lee and Jane Zwep went to the Huron Country Playhouse to see You’ll Get Used to It – The War Story. It was a wonderful musical and we all enjoyed it immensely. Dinner before the show for the ladies was a nice treat. I would recommend going to see the show if it is ever in the area again. The Walton Hall hosted a Blyth Festival dinner on Saturday evening for a very small crowd of 20. They enjoyed a roast beef dinner and were extremely happy with fresh strawberry pie and peach cheesecake for dessert. Helping for the event were board members Judy Emmrich, Judy Lee, Jo-Ann McDonald and Margaret McInroy. The construction at the RTM North building in Walton is in full swing. Soon the trusses will go up and roof will go on. Congratulations to George and Pat Langlois on celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary. The best couple in the world, with a beautiful family, loads of friends and hearts of gold, they are a great example to all who know them. Congratulations from all your Brussels friends! It is grandparenting time around our place for this week and next. We have either three, four, five or six children for all day, all night, half days, or before or after camp days. There has been quite a change in noise level at our house between deciding what they will eat, what they won’t, making a mess, cleaning up the mess and then making another mess. Yikes, I had forgotten the joy of children! Celebrating birthdays this past week were Lorna Fraser, Pete Martene, Neil Mitchell, Melanie Kirkby, Emma Johnston, Jackson Janmaat, Alicia Dalton, Nicholas Shahshahani, Doreen Hackwell, Ed McClure, Monica Ryan, Tracey McKee, Jackie Glanville and Grace Robinson. Happy birthday to all. NEWS FROM WALTON By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 PEOPLE AROUND WALTON Jamming Seaforth’s main street was the site for the town’s annual Summerfest on Friday night, which featured plenty of things to do and see, including a car show and a live music stage. Kicking off the action for the night was Stone School, who would eventually make way for Singing and Fiddling, The Honey Sweethearts and The Seaforth Garageband before sunset yoga with Sarah Blake finished up the night. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Huron East wards taxes low in county comparison Huron East’s taxes remain low by comparison to its counterparts in Huron County, with one of its wards boasting the second-lowest tax rate in the county.
