Moncrieff Road
paving delayed
A section of Moncrieff Road set to
be hard-topped this year needs to be
upgraded first according to North
Huron Director of Public Works
Sean McGhee.
The section of road, from Currie
Line to Scott Line, is the next stage
in paving Moncrieff Road with tar
and chip, however, after a review of
the road, McGhee found it lacking.
He said, in the process of reviewing
the road, staff found that the
infrastructure is very thin, with only
one foot of ‘A’ gravel over the native
top soil, likely laid decades ago.
The road is also inconsistent as far
as width goes, he says, ranging from
6.5 metres wide to 7.5 metres.
“The concern is we’re taking a
significant amount of money and
applying it to a road base that’s thin,
and not durable,” he said. “The fear
is, if we hard surface it, we won’t get
seven to 10 years as a result of lack
of foundation.”
McGhee recommended that
council approve rebuilding the road
this year and look at paving it during
next year’s budget process.
“The recommendation is to
redirect the funds to the same block
and rebuild the road,” he said. “We
will keep the foot of gravel that’s
done, put a foot of ‘B’ gravel down
and then ‘A’ gravel down and widen
the road to a standard eight metres.”
McGhee said that North Huron
has the in-house expertise to manage
the project, which will cut down on
overhead. The municipality will still
need to tender for the raw materials
as well as their hauling and the
equipment needed to do the job. By
tendering out parts of the job, but
managing it in-house, McGhee said
it would still be eligible for
provincial grants.
As a result of the discussion, East
Wawanosh Councillors Chris
Palmer and Anita van Hittersum
agreed it would be good to have an
inventory of other rural roads done
to prevent similar occurrences.
McGhee agreed, saying that is
something he would like to see in
the future. He added that staff were
surprised that the road was so
shallow, saying it gave him pause
about other projects in the future.
Van Hittersum also said that
people will be disappointed that the
paving won’t be taking place, but
agreed that the project needs to be
pursued properly.
McGhee told council the road
could be paved, if that was their
direction, but he is concerned that it
wouldn’t last the seven to 10 years it
would be expected to due to the
current condition of the road.
Council approved the change of
direction.

Collision
On Thursday, July 11, the Fire Department of North Huron (FDNH), Huron County paramedics
and Huron Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a vehicle rollover on the bridge over
the Maitland River in Auburn. Reports indicate that the occupants of the vehicle were taken to
hospital. Above, FDNH firefighters clean up fluids spilled by the vehicle while another waits
with water ready if any ignition were to occur. (Denny Scott photo)

The combined fourth and fifth
meetings of the Wawanosh Life
Skills 4-H Sewing Club were held
on Saturday, July 6 at the Auburn
Hall. The hall was set up with tables
with sewing machines and fabric on
them. Along with the rest of the
members, we also had Marita
Oudshoorn and Marilyn Bruinsma
from the third meeting to help us
with our sewing.
President Deanna began the
meeting with the pledge, then leader
Mary Ellen explained the plan for
the meeting which was to finish
everything from our previous
meetings and then start our aprons.
Next, secretary Melina Peel led roll
call which was, “what might you
typically sew by hand instead of
with a machine?” Some answers
were “buttons and tears in pants and
shirts.”
Another adult helper, Cathy
Drennan, then showed us the
different fabrics and patterns that we
would be using to make our aprons.
After that, we started working on our
shorts and hats and then it was time
for us to have a snack. After the
snack, members played some games
with balloons. One of the games
played was a game where members
had to tie balloons to their ankles
and try to pop each other’s balloons.
The winner was the last person with
a balloon attached to their ankle.
After playing games with
balloons, the group went back to
sewing because it was a combined
meeting. Eventually it was time to
go home and leader Mary Ellen
informed the group when the next
meetings were going to be held.

He who walks by Scripture rule
(Thomas Brooks)
“How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your Word.” Psalm
119:9
“I have hidden Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11
If you would not be outwitted by any of Satan’s evil schemes, then walk by the rule of
the Word of God.
He who walks by Scripture rule, walks most safely.
He who walks by Scripture rule, walks most honorably,
He who walks by Scripture rule, walks most sweetly.
When men throw off the Word, then God throws them off--and then Satan takes them
by the hand, and leads them into snares at his pleasure.
He who thinks himself too good to be ruled by the Word, will be found too bad to be
owned by God; and if God does not, or will not own him--then Satan will by his
stratagems overthrow him. Those who walk by Scripture rule, shall be kept in the hour
of temptation.
“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way
of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and
on His law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2
“Sanctify them by the truth; Your Word is truth.” John 17:17
