NEW GATES DEDICATED AT
BRANDON CEMETERY
A large crowd attended the
Brandon Cemetery Memorial and
Dedication service on Sunday, July
7. The gates were dedicated in
loving memory of Doug Bruce. Neil
Olson, Alan Scott, Ada Taylor, Ross
Taylor and Glen Van Camp were
remembered.
Thanks to Brian Hymers for
presiding at this service. Thanks also
to Lila Procter for sharing the gift of
music and to Arnold Bruce for
providing the sound system.
Ron Cook, Chairman of the Board
reported on the construction of the
new gates:
“The construction of the new gates
has been a long, worthwhile and
rewarding journey. One evening in
the fall of 2016, Eric Ross, nephew
of Doug Bruce came to Joyce
Vincent’s home and informed the
board that Doug had bequeathed a
sum of money to the cemetery in his
will. We were humbled and
honoured at Doug’s thoughtfulness.
“A meeting of the board was
called to discuss a memorial for
Doug at the cemetery. Arnold Bruce
suggested that the bricks in the gates
were beginning to deteriorate and
we could maybe replace them with
new ones. The board agreed and
decided to put up new gates in
Doug’s memory.
“An interesting fact about the old
gates is that they were constructed
and built in 1935, which was the
year Doug was born. They lasted his
lifetime.
“At first, the intention was to put
up stone gates like you see at other
cemeteries. The board met with a
contractor and had a quote submitted
for field stone gates. The quote came
in a little high and left the board
questioning what it should do.
“After the old gates were taken
down, Dean Vincent was speaking
with Mac Anderson of Wingham
Memorials and Mac wondered what
was going on at the cemetery. Dean
informed him that some money had
been donated to the cemetery and we
were putting up new gates.
“Mac expressed his interest in the
construction of the new ones. Mac
attended a meeting with the board to
discuss the plans. It wasn’t long
before drawings, samples and a
quote were submitted. The board
was very impressed with what Mac
was offering and decided to proceed.
“Many meetings, decisions and
visits to Wingham Memorials
followed. Mac’s vision, knowledge
and professionalism, along with
that of his employees in helping
the board along the way resulted
in the gates dedicated on Sunday.
On behalf of the board, we are all
very proud to have been a part of this
beautiful addition to the cemetery.
