Siertsemas celebrate 60th wedding anniversary
Over the weekend, Hebo and
Margaret Siertsema celebrated 60
years of marriage – a feat so rarely
marked in this day and age.
It was on Independence Day, July
4, 1959, that Margaret Dalrymple,
the daughter of William and Hazel of
RR3, Blyth, wed Hebo Siertsema,
the son of Albert and Jacobmina
Siertsema of Blyth.
The couple was married at St.
Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in
Blyth, which is now the Blyth
Christian Reformed Church. Rev.
D.S. Lane officiated the ceremony.
Margaret’s attendants were Shirley
Wood (Patterson), Jean Horton
(Rathwell) and Betty Baker
(Siertsema) and Hebo’s attendants
were Murray Siertsema (now
deceased), John Siertsema and Alan
Dalrymple (now deceased).
For their honeymoon, the
Siertsemas travelled to Alberta for
the Calgary Stampede, making their
way back to Ontario through the
United States.
Upon their return, the couple lived
at RR3, Blyth, where Hebo worked
as a farmer and drove a milk truck
and Margaret worked as a nurse at
the Wingham and District Hospital.
Margaret is now retired, but Hebo
still helps his son out with his farm.
Hebo and Margaret had four
children together: Jean Bennett of
Lucan, Alan of Rodney, Ken at the
home farm near Blyth and Bruce of
Goderich. They have 12
grandchildren and one great-
grandchild.
Over the years, Hebo and
Margaret have enjoyed hunting,
travelling, camping and gardening.
They are both members of the
Melville Presbyterian Church in
Brussels and they care deeply for
their four-legged pet Millie.
The couple celebrated on Sunday,
both at home and at the Auburn Hall.
Friends and family members
travelled from far and wide to attend,
coming from Holland, Michigan,
South Carolina, Wyoming, London,
Bayfield, Aurora and all throughout
Huron County.
The Siertsemas said they felt very
special when, a few days before their
celebration, their neighbours
organized a hay bale likeness of the
couple at the road entrance of the
farm.

The third meeting of the
Wawanosh Life Skills 4-H Sewing
Club was held on Tuesday, June 18
at the home of Gerrie Bos in Blyth,
who was hostess for the evening.
Gerrie’s basement was set up with
sergers, regular sewing machines,
ironing boards, irons and other tools
needed such as scissors, pins, fabric
and patterns.
President Deanna started the
meeting with the pledge and then
leader Mary Ellen introduced the
ladies who would be helping with
the sewing. They were hostess
Gerrie Bos, sewer Marita
Oudshoorn, sewer Marilyn
Bruinsma and sewer Ann Feagan.
This group of ladies meet
throughout the year to sew clothing
that is sent to missions in Canada
and overseas.
Mary Ellen explained the plan for
the meeting, which was to work with
the sewing ladies and the leaders to
finish sewing the mission shorts
patterns (that were begun at the
previous meeting) using sergers and
regular sewing machines. Then
President Deanna led roll call which
was, “What items are you sewing at
this meeting? What is the fabric
type?” Members responses were,
“Shorts made of poly-cotton.”
Members then got busy learning
how to use a serger to sew seams, to
finish seams and to prevent fabric
edges from fraying. Members
worked hard to try and finish the
mission shorts, but some shorts will
still need sewing time at the next
meeting. Members also took a turn
at cutting out a hat pattern for hats
that would be sewn and sent to
northern Canada.
Time at the meeting passed very
quickly. Members thanked host
Gerrie and the other ladies for
their wonderful help in teaching
new sewing skills. Members enjoyed
delicious snacks and
juice provided by Cassandra.
The next meeting was scheduled
for Saturday, July 6 at the Auburn
Hall.
