Sports Cycling strategy marked a success Since the Huron County cycling strategy was adopted by Huron County Council in early 2017, Planner Jenn Burns says the county has made tremendous progress in making cycling safer in the community. Burns spoke about the last two- and-a-half years of successes at Huron County Council’s July 3 meeting, highlighting both tangible changes that have increased the popularity in cycling in Huron County as well as awareness campaigns that have educated both motorists and cyclists about sharing the road with one another. The indicator of success for the county’s Cycling Advisory Committee is to “raise the level of ridership within the county, while reducing the number of cycling incidents.” Burns said that the county has updated its map of cycling routes and included details from the new cycling infrastructure plan. The Public Works Department has installed over 60 “Share the Road” signs throughout the county and more will be placed once the new cycling routes are finalized and maps are printed, she told councillors. The county has also seen success through its paved shoulder pilot project on a six-kilometre stretch from Benmiller to Saltford. Burns said that the county will be placing traffic counters on the stretch this summer to measure its level of usage among cyclists. Burns said the county also went to great lengths to celebrate bike month in June, holding bike maintenance workshops and having representatives attend local events to promote cycling in the county, including events at local libraries and pop-up information booths at the Clinton Spring Fair and the Huron County Ride to End Hunger. In addition to the production and distribution of Share the Road stickers and magnets, the county has also partnered with the local OPP to print a Share the Road pamphlet that includes a bike safety checklist. Burns added that the committee has been very active on social media and consulting with a number of local cycling groups, gathering input on routes and trails to pass on to cyclists, both local and visiting. While many of the 2017 and 2018 action items have been completed, this year the Huron County Health Unit plans on creating an active school travel subcommittee and the Cycling Advisory Committee is aiming to review the Bicycle- Friendly Communities Report from Share the Road for additional projects and initiatives that could be implemented in the future. Council accepted Burns’ report and commended her on her work with the cycling community.
