Procters reflect on exchange student experiences
Over the past five years, Don and
Kathy Procter have been host
parents to seven international
students (five from Brazil, one from
Japan and one from Thailand).
The students attended F.E. Madill
Secondary School. They come for
several reasons, but mostly to
improve their English language
skills and to experience life in
another culture. Something that has
amazed us many times is the fact
that these students enter high school
with limited English, have just been
transported into our culture and they
ask to be placed in high academic
courses (the sciences, and maths)
and often are still in the top of the
class with their marks. The students
work very hard at their studies.
The Procters have learned so much
from the students – about life in their
homes, and in their countries. They
have learned to enjoy eating some
new foods and about some of their
celebrations, including that some of
them eat rice and/or beans three
times a day.
The students all come from very
warm climates so the thought of
wearing bulky winter coats and
boots was a new experience. Snow,
snow storms, ice, and cancelled
busses are all very new experiences
that we are sure they will never
forget.
The students became part of the
Procter family. They joined in family
activities – Christmas, birthdays and
other celebrations.
The Procters took them to some of
our usual tourist attractions –
Niagara Falls, CN Tower, Ottawa
parliament building, Canada’s
Wonderland, but also gave them
experiences of hiking on the Bruce
Trail, camping, building snowmen,
theatre, bonfires and wiener roasts,
roller skating, canoeing and much
more. The time went very fast for all.
What strikes the Procters with
each semester is how fast the time
flies with the students. This past
week the family have bid two
students farewell (one from Thailand
and one from Brazil), always with
the hope that they will see them
again someday.
The International Exchange
program brings many benefits to our
community – bringing support to our
local schools, helping with the local
economy, and making our
community more culturally
sensitive. Perth hosted over 200
students from more than 12
countries.
The Procters say they are very
grateful to each of these students for
all that they bring to the community.
They have been thankful to be part
of a network of other host parents
and the support they received from
them.
On a beautiful sunny day 42
descendants of Oliphant and Mary
(Ireland) Smith gathered June 23 at
the Belgrave Community Centre
which was beautifully decorated
with spring flowers.
Oliphant and Mary’s daughter
Jean Robertson (Smith) Taylor’s
family, were in charge of the reunion
with help from her oldest brother,
Hugh Smith’s family. They are the
two oldest of nine. Eighty-eight-
year-old Bill Taylor asked God’s
blessing on the bountiful potluck
dinner.
The famous chef Jeff Cardiff
cooked delicious pickled ham. The
dessert table was well ladened and
was soon to disappear in the Smith
tradition.
Family trivia was conducted by
Doreen Taylor, Laurel (Dane)
Jauzemis, Shana (Dane) Hamilton
and Marion Taylor conducted games
and prizes were awarded.
The prize for the youngest was
won by Malcolm, born Sept. 20,
2018, son of Theo and Jen van der
Meulen, grandson of Lynn and Ivan
Dane.
A moment’s silence was observed
to remember deceased members,
especially Ross and Ada Taylor,
Wallace McKee, Eileen Nethercott
and Sharon Coultes.
It was voted to have another
reunion in two years with Elizabeth
(Smith) Cardiff’s family in charge.
A good time was had by all.
