Lees return to roots with trip to England
Another week of spring is gone
and still a lot of farming and field
work ahead. Many have corn still to
plant and a few have moved into
planting soybeans. Not a very good
spring, which will make for a very
late fall harvest. Let’s hope we have
a good, warm/hot summer with
occasional rain.
Our get-well wishes go out to
Gerry Ryan. He was involved in a
motorcycle mishap and suffered
some injuries. He was in a London
hospital and we hope he is soon
home and on the mend.
The quick and severe thunder and
lightning storm a week ago caused
some damage around the area. Ed
McClure was jolted awake when a
tree at his place was hit and blown
apart. Ed got right to work and has it
all cleaned up already.
Rick and Margaret McInroy and
many other residents of the
Drummond Street apartments had a
busy Saturday last week. They
prepared and served the wedding
food for radio personality Jeff
Norgate and his bride Cindy.
The Lions Elimination Draw had
the usual crowd enjoy a great meal
with plenty of people hoping to be
winners. Some Walton residents who
were winners included Greg, Laura
and Greg Bowers. Look for the
complete list in the paper.
Returning from a 10-day trip to
England is Chris Lee. Chris, his
mother Joan Lee and sister Christine
flew to England to enjoy a trip to
remember their roots. He and his
sister were born in England and
came to Canada when they were five
and three years old. This time they
returned together to the home they
were born in, to visit with relatives
on both the Lee side and their
mother’s side. One cousin who is 85
remembers his cousin Joan as a 17-
year-old girl, full of life and a
beauty. They travelled to the north of
England to see many of their
relatives and toured old landmarks
and cathedrals. They enjoyed
traditional fish and chips by the sea,
gammon and mushy peas and scotch
eggs; all very delicious. It was a
memorable experience for Joan and
her children. Welcome home.
Sunday afternoon was a lovely day
for a shower for bride-to-be Abby
McGavin. Many friends and
relatives gathered at the home of her
aunt Sharon Carnochan to present
her with beautiful gifts. The Walton
community had collected for her and
presented her with many lovely
things from her registry.
Congratulations to Abby and best
wishes on her upcoming wedding in
July.
John Lowe spent three days in
Saint John, New Brunswick last
week. It was the National
Emergency Nurses Conference
being held at the Trade and
Convention Centre from May 24-26.
His trip did not begin very well with
his 9 a.m. flight being cancelled out
of London on Thursday, due to a
thunderstorm, so that delayed him
five hours.
Emergency department nurses and
flight nurses from across Canada
participated in three days of
learning. There was about 430
people in attendance. They had a
gala event on Friday at the Diamond
Jubilee Cruise Ship Terminal. John
reports that unfortunately the next
cruise ship wasn’t due until Tuesday
or John might have hopped on. A
great deal of learning in a short time,
but well worth it.
There is some action at the
formerly owned Dauphin’s building
in Walton. The new owners, RTM
North, are putting up an addition and
the equipment was busy there this
week. We will be watching as it
progresses.
Celebrating birthdays to complete
May include Adam Forbes and Rob
Shortreed. June starts with Neil
McGavin, Scott Henderson, Kyle
Pryce, Patricia Andrades, Ernie
Lewington, Shelley Coleman, Scott
Dalton, Jillian Houston Csöff,
Amanda McClure, Merle Hackwell
and Sarah Tipple.

Brussels Ball Day
The Brussels Tigers and Brussels Minor Baseball Association held its annual celebration of all
things baseball on the weekend with the annual Brussels Ball Day. Despite some wet weather,
the event featured games throughout the day from some of the youngest players in the
organization up to the Tigers, a senior team. Above, the Pre-Mite team took on their opponents
from Belgrave while the sun was still out, before the rain would hit the community later in the
day, putting a bit of a damper on Brussels Ball Day’s later games. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
