Madill soccer team captures WOSSAA silver
The F.E. Madill varsity soccer
team earned a silver-place finish at
the Western Ontario Secondary
School Athletic Association
(WOSSAA) tournament late last
month.
The squad won the Huron-Perth
Championship with a 1-0 win over
Stratford Central Secondary School.
The team then posted a 1-0 win over
Montcalm Secondary School to earn
a berth in the finals, then lost 4-1 to
Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary
School, earning the silver medal.
“It was a very hard-fought game,”
said coach Wayne Smith. “The boys
played an excellent game, but the
Mother Teresa team played a very
disciplined style of game and passed
well.”
While Madill has a team
encompassing players from every
grade, other schools field Junior and
Senior squads, making the skill level
different for teams from smaller
schools, Smith said.
“The team has some students in
their fifth year on it this year,” Smith
said. “When you see them on the
field with the Grade 9 students, you
can tell there is quite a difference.”
The squad also welcomed three
exchange students from Brazil this
year, Smith said, which is normal.
He said typically the team does
have an exchange student join, but to
have three, all of whom had a
passion for soccer, made a
difference.
“Their skill level brought the team
up,” he said. “They all played well
together.”
The team’s month-and-a-half long
season is now complete with the
silver medal win.
Smith said it was an enjoyable
season with a good end.

The Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey
Association (BBMHA), alongside
the Seaforth Stars Minor Hockey
Association, are hosting a
fundraising day at the races at the
Clinton Raceway this weekend.
The event will be held from noon
to 4:30 p.m. on June 9 at the
raceway, located at 147 Beech
Street in Clinton.
BBMHA Fundraising Chair
Ashley Bromley explained that the
group is going to be hosting a
barbecue, a 50/50 draw and a small
bake sale in partnership with the
association’s Seaforth counterpart.
“The funds raised will help with
operating costs,” she said. “It will
also go towards improving
equipment for our members.”
This is the first time the
organization has hosted an event at
the raceway, Bromley said, and the
group is “dipping a toe in the water”
to see what future partnerships
could exist.

Ticks, mosquitoes now a concern
As the weather warms up, ticks
and mosquitoes are becoming active.
The Huron County Health Unit
reminds everyone to protect
themselves against tick and
mosquito bites.
“While the risk of becoming ill
from a bug bite in Huron County is
low, it’s still important to protect
yourself against Lyme disease and
West Nile virus,” says Public Health
Inspector Kaitlyn Kelly.
Lyme disease is spread through
the bite of an infected blacklegged
tick. A tick must be attached and
feeding for at least 24-36 hours
before the tick will start to transmit
the bacteria, so early detection and
removal is important.
West Nile virus is spread to
humans through the bite of an
infected mosquito. The easiest way
to prevent infection is to prevent
mosquito bites, especially during
dawn and dusk when many
mosquito species are most active.
Here are some ways to prevent
tick and mosquito bites:
• Wear light-coloured, long-
sleeved shirts, long pants and
closed-toed shoes. Pull your socks
over your pant legs
• Apply an insect repellent,
approved by Health Canada, to both
your skin and clothes and always
read and follow the manufacturer’s
instructions
• Conduct head-to-toe tick checks,
remembering to check children and
pets as well
• Shower after returning from the
outdoors to wash off any loose ticks
• Put your clothes into a dryer on
high heat for 60 minutes to kill any
possible ticks
• If you find a tick on you, remove
it using tweezers, grasping the tick
as close to the skin as possible and
pulling straight out slowly but
firmly. Place the tick in a container
and bring it to your healthcare
provider or the Huron County
Health Unit for identification and
testing if needed.
The Huron County Health Unit
conducts mosquito and tick
surveillance programs. The Health
Unit’s West Nile virus mosquito
trapping program will begin mid-
June. The Health Unit will conduct
tick dragging in the spring and fall to
help build a better understanding of
the different tick populations in
Huron County.

disease, West Nile virus and ways to

Unit website at huronhealthunit.ca.
