Elimination draw evidence of good community work
Did you ever think about the many
shades of green that are part of
nature’s palette? A slow gaze over
our landscape now is an awesome
sight. Words are not good enough to
even try to tell the story of the green
that is ours.
At this time of year, a drive in any
direction will show the garden that
we live in, corn peeping out, trees in
full blossom and bulbs showing their
finest. We don’t need to go far to
experience beauty.
The Brussels Horticultural Society
crew was out in full force this past
week as the flower boxes on the
main street were planted. Now we
just have to wait patiently for the
blooms to show and again appreciate
the work of the flower people. With
the secretary’s guidance, you can
have some fun with fairy doors. A bit
of decoration and lots of imagination
will show several spots around the
village with wee doors and
adornments. Join the fun and have a
smile as you find the doors on your
village walks.
One of the things I truly appreciate
about our community is the way we
support each other. Somewhere
along the line someone must have
told us that to have a great
community we need to work
together. So the Lions Club’s
Elimination Draw was a good
example of supporting a common
goal. Community betterment is their
goal and people know the reputation
of the Lions for seeing a need and
dealing with it.
This event is a long-running
evening that offers us a chance to
support the Lions and their work.
The ice surface was full of folks
eating, visiting and laughing and
then more of the same repeated for a
great evening. Chatting to folks you
don’t see often or catching up with
old friends makes this event one
where tickets are often spoken for in
advance. A cross section of
community and former residents is a
given. So I’m grateful for the
attitude of sharing and supporting
each other as we try to keep our
community such a nice place to be.
Theatre season is upon us and
once again we are fortunate to have
so many major players within
driving distance. Checking them out,
there is a subject to suit any
interest – music, comedy, drama and
good old storytelling. Set your
schedule soon.
The pool is ready to roll with
lessons. Later this month there will
be an opportunity each week day for
adults to move their bodies in the
pool. Check for a time that suits you,
get your exercise and support the
pool. By this age, well mine anyway,
body image should not be an issue,
so dig out your swimsuit and do
some good on several fronts.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Need a veggie? Take a veggie.
A group calling themselves the Cooking Brussels Sprouts borrowed some planting boxes from
the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre to build a new green space in Brussels on
Monday. The group planted vegetables and herbs across the road from the village post office
with a sign explaining that the plants were there for use (see insert). The initiative is aimed at
helping the community and showing that gardens can bloom up anywhere. (Denny Scott photo)
