Vanastra cannabis site is fully compliant says Knight Huron East Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight has conducted further research, concluding that there isn’t much Huron East can do regarding Vanastra residents’ complaints about a new marijuana growing location. Knight addressed the issue at council’s May 21 meeting saying he discovered that the location is not a commercial growing operation, but rather home to four individual growing licences. Four per site, he said, is the maximum number of licences. The OPP, Knight said, has indicated that sites with four licences at one location can hold as many as 2,000 plants. He added that the operation complies with all federal regulations and, unlike minimum distance separation for farm operations, there is no requirement to notify the municipality or neighbouring properties of the site. Knight also said that in speaking with Jacqui Empson-Laporte from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs the government’s focus is on shutting down operations making illicit sales, rather than the impact of odour throughout the community. Knight said that he plans on making contact with the owner of the operation and communicating the municipality’s concerns on behalf of residents, but that there isn’t much the municipality can do in regards to something that is regulated federally. Councillor Ray Chartrand said that while the horse is out of the barn on the current operation, he did feel that Huron East should work with the Huron County Planning and Development Department to attempt to restrict such uses in urban areas. Knight, however, said that if a site complies with federal regulations and it’s a permitted use for a property, there isn’t much the municipality or the county can do.
