Online condolences can be made at mcglynnfamilyfuneralhome.com North Huron staff is currently developing a policy to help govern the purchase and installation of memorial assets across the community. During council’s May 21 meeting, Director of Public Works Sean McGhee explained that the municipality often received requests for planting trees or purchasing park benches in memoriam on municipal properties, specifically trails and parks. He recommended a policy that would dictate acceptability as far as those requests. McGhee added that any memorials placed should be cost-neutral for the township in placement and maintenance. “We want there to be no impact on the taxpayer,” he said. “We understand there will be some maintenance over time, but the idea is not to increase the operational burden.” As part of the policy, there will be a standard bench which could have a bronze memorial plaque on it and suggestions for types of trees to be planted. “Currently, there is a standard for benches, “ he said. “We have some outliers, and we’re trying to replace them. If we don’t have a standard, things can start to look like a furniture warehouse.” He said under the policy, there wouldn’t be special memorials allowed that would increase costs. “With tree-planting, we would want to see a well-established tree, and want input into where [it’s planted] he said. “We’re also not recommending ground-level memorials, as they create additional work and operational concern. At this point, we’re looking for direction. If council sees value in the policy, we will create that.” Deputy-Reeve Trevor Seip said he felt it was definitely a necessary policy, though he wanted assurances that existing memorials are grandfathered as they stand today. Councillor Kevin Falconer said he would like staff to be able to direct people as to where benches could be placed, saying a plan could go a long way to helping that out. Reeve Bernie Bailey, however, didn’t agree with a complete ban on ground memorials near planted trees, directing staff to consider alternatives. “If someone installed a plaque for the summer, or for a few years, could we use that?” he asked. “We should have a look at that.” Failing plaques, Bailey suggested creating some kind of record of the trees so that descendants could find memorial trees placed for members of their family. Seip said that such a move would likely be expensive, and that the onus of remembering where a memorial is placed is on the memorializer. Council directed staff to create a policy for future consideration at an upcoming council meeting.
