Kai speaks to ‘Jacob’s Ladder’
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, May 26,
were Rob Mason and Marilyn Craig.
Ushering were Kody and Rob
Mason and David Onn. Susanna
Lynman was guest pianist, Katie
Dockstader, choir director and
Kaydon Mason ran the Power Point.
Rev. David Kai was guest speaker
and welcomed everyone to church
on a beautiful sunny morning. He
drew everyone’s attention to the
announcements printed in the
bulletin.
Rev. Kai asked the children what
they call the prayer we say before
we eat. It is called grace. One prayer
that we learn when we are young is,
“God is Great. God is Good” and
when we sing grace it is often “Be
Present at Our Table Lord.” Rev. Kai
told the story of his grandmother
who always said grace in the
language of her country Japan. He
showed the children a word in
Japanese that had many meanings
and one of them was “thank you”.
Everyone repeated the prayer.
The children’s hymn was, “Jesus,
Teacher, Brave and Bold”. The
scripture reading was from Genesis
28: 10-19, the story of Jacob’s
ladder. The choir sang the anthem,
“Heaven’s Jubilee”.
Rev. Kai’s message to the
congregation was “Jacob’s Ladder”.
Jacob wandered around the country
afraid to go home because of his
brother Esau. His mother had played
a trick on Abraham who thought that
Jacob was Esau. Then Abraham
bestowed Esau’s birthright on Jacob.
Esau was Abraham’s favourite son
and Jacob was his mother’s favourite
son. Jacob came to a spot to sleep
and dreamed of a ladder going up to
the Heavens. Jacob put a stone to
mark the place and he called it
Bethel. Rev. Kai had a ladder that
represented the ladder that Jacob
dreamed about and a ladder that was
Jesus’ which if you put the two
ladders together, one going up and
the other across it, it forms a cross.
God was at the top of the ladder.
When God is absent in our lives we
feel alone, but we are not alone. God
is with us everywhere we go. Jesus
taught of God’s love and how He
wants us to love one another. God’s
love reaches out to all of us. The
next hymn, “A Light is Gleaming”,
was sung. The offering was received
followed by the singing of the
response, “Grant Us, God, The
Grace”, the offertory prayer, the
prayers for the people and the
singing of the Lord’s Prayer.
The last hymn, “I Feel the Winds
of God Today”, was followed by the
commissioning and the benediction
and the singing of “Amen.”
Everyone enjoyed a cup of coffee
and fellowship before going home.
