The Citizen, 2019-05-23, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2019. By Evy Verschaeve The second meeting of the South Huron 4-H Sheep Club was held on May 12 at the Verschaeve family farm, just outside of Blyth. The overcast day wasn’t a damper on members’ moods as they showed up one by one and put on their clear biosecurity boots. By 6:45 p.m. all of the members had arrived and the meeting got underway. As usual, the meeting was opened by President Grace Hallahan. The roll call for the meeting was, “what is the breed of your lamb and what is its name”. There was a variety of sheep breeds listed, along with a multitude of names. After the initial formalities were taken care of, the club split into two groups based on the age and judging experience. The two groups then split apart and practised judging an array of classes that they will face at the judging competition on June 8. Members used their critical eye to judge the structure and strength in market kids, uniformity and cleanliness in grain corn, muscle and squareness in market lambs, and body capacity and leg strength in dairy heifers. Once all classes had been judged and reasons had been given by each member as to why they placed the class in the order that they did, the entire club met up again in the sheep barn, where member and host for the night, Evy Verschaeve, talked about the different breeds that are present on the farm. The flock consists mostly of rideau, charolais and ile de france cross ewes. Lastly, in the fading light of the barn, Verschaeve caught a show lamb from a previous year and demonstrated how to set up a sheep in the show ring, whilst also giving extra showing tips for members. The members then convened in a better lit shed to end the meeting with the 4-H motto and snacks provided by the McMichael and Hallahan families. The next meeting will be held on June 2 at the Hallahans’ farm. 4-H Club meets Learning The South Huron 4-H Sheep Club met last week at the Verschaeve family farm just outside of Blyth to learn a thing or two about judging at its second meeting of the season.
