At the Branch ‘Catch the Ace’ fundraiser jackpot to grow to $25,000 By Jo-Ann McDonald The Brussels Legion Branch was busy with meetings this past week. Cadets met Tuesday evening and Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald went to a meeting with Clinton Raceway staff about the Sept. 1 Driver’s Challenge charity fundraiser for the four local Legions: Clinton, Wingham, Seaforth and Brussels. It is a busy day with some advance notice required, so now we can begin to plan. There is an opportunity for race sponsorship and each Branch needs three sponsors. There is a silent auction and each Branch gathers its own donation of items, sets up, collects and cleans up from sales. There is a bake table and each Branch needs to provide five dozen items – cupcakes, cookies, cakes, pies, etc. and take a turn manning the donation bake table. There is a Chicken Barbecue by Pine Ridge Chalet and the Branch has tickets to sell. They are $20. It sounds like a busy day for Sunday, Sept. 1 for Comrades of the Branches. Wednesday was a meeting of the Catch the Ace committee and how to handle Friday night’s draw. It was decided to make it fair for all, that the numbered tickets (not the Ace tickets) would be given out starting at 6 p.m. to patrons staying at the Branch to wait for the draw and maybe have some food. The ticket sales for the next draw, if the Ace is not found, would go on sale, with the numbers being called in sequence, in an orderly fashion, at 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. following the draw. If there are tickets remaining, they will go on sale on Saturday, during regular business hours, opening at 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. We can confirm that this system worked very well and there were no problems with heated tempers like other places have experienced. The chance of winning the jackpot seems to make some people a little short of temper. We thank everyone for their patience with the system and for their support of the Brussels Legion. The ace draw conducted on Friday, May 17 had the weekly winner of Simone Wilker winning $850. She chose the envelope number 16 and the three of diamonds was revealed. The jackpot will raise to near $25,000 next week. The Saturday afternoon euchre last week had seven tables playing the progressive style of play. The high pink card had two tied, so they split first and second prize. They were Anne Laidlaw and Mary McIntosh, each with 70 points. First prize for the white card also had 70 points and was Harold Metcalfe. Second prize went to Harry Smith with 66 points. Low prize for pink was Janet Davies, 40 and for white cards Betty Thompson, 44 points. The lone hands prize went to Marion Harrison with three. The next euchre is May 25. Learning and helping Last year, James Hickling and members of the Brussels Tigers started a free baseball clinic for Brussels youth focused on pitching, catching, batting and all the other skills needed for the sport. The clinic ran two nights a week for three weeks and, this year, admission was free but players were asked to bring food items for the local food bank. Thanks to the event, Brussels Minor Baseball was able to donate 250 non-perishable food items to local food banks. From left, with the haul, are Ty Somers, Katie Somers and Macie Taylor. (Photo submitted) NEWS FROM BRUSSELS Road to be closed for annual Cadet Review Huron East Council approved a road closure for the annual review of the Brussels Cadets, which is now set for Tuesday, June 4. Flora Street, the road that runs adjacent to the Brussels Legion, will be closed that night to allow for the review, which, weather- permitting, is traditionally held outside. Due to logistical issues, the event was moved to June 4 from May 28. This year’s review will be the 40th annual in the cadets’ history. Council approved the road closure for the evening at its May 7 meeting. *** At its May 7 meeting, Huron East Council declared the annual Ethel co-ed baseball tournament a municipally-significant event. The tournament is set for the weekend of July 5-7 and will welcome 12 teams to the hamlet in hopes of raising money for the Ethel minor ball program. *** Huron East Council has officially renewed the dispatching services agreement between the City of Stratford Fire Department and the Municipality of Huron East (on behalf of its three fire stations) for another five-year term. In a report to council, presented at its May 7 meeting, Huron East Fire Chief Marty Bedard stated that the agreement was simply a continuation of the decision made in 2009 after those at the Seaforth Hospital made it clear that they no longer wished to provide dispatch services for the Huron East Fire Department. The decision was made due to the closure of the hospital’s emergency room throughout the night, meaning they would be unable to provide 24-hour-a-day dispatch service. In 2018, the Stratford service cost Huron East just under $6,000 per station, in addition to a share of two phone lines and an annual radio licence fee, which is $270 per year, per station. Bedard said he has been pleased with the Stratford service and recommended the extension of the contract. Council approved Bedard’s recommendation. *** At its May 7 meeting, Huron East Council approved the tender of Theo Vandenberk Construction Inc. for the replacement of Bridge M10, which is on Hensall Road between Sawmill and Hullett-McKillop Roads. The tender was the lowest of the three received at a cost of $753,333.71, edging out the second- place tender submitted by VanDriel Excavating by less than $1,000. Both tenders were significantly lower than that received from Premier Concrete Inc., which was just under $900,000. Council approved the recommendation of Director of Public Works Barry Mills to accept the Vandenberk Construction tender.
