Several North Huron Councillors
have concerns with provincial cuts
to conservation authorities and how
they will impact the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority (MVCA).
Prompted by a letter from the
MVCA, Councillor Chris Palmer
said he was concerned about how
conservation authorities would
operate going forward, saying he
was worried those funds may need to
come from member municipalities.
Councillor Anita van Hittersum
said that, as North Huron’s
representative on the MVCA board,
she felt the cuts are a significant
concern.
“The MVCA [is] looking at cost-
recovery funding,” she said. “With
the Water Source Protection issue
under review, it’s all a little bit in the
air. We’re not completely sure yet.”
Councillor Kevin Falconer asked
if the cuts would negate existing
funding agreements.
“There is a lot of uncertainty
here,” Reeve Bernie Bailey said.
“We’re responsible to the ratepayers
of North Huron.”
Bailey explained that North Huron
can’t be providing funds to the
MVCA if it’s going to be used to
repair a bridge in Goderich.
“I’m worried about spending
money outside of North Huron.”
Van Hittersum said that, when the
funding for the MVCA is reviewed,
it may be wise for North Huron to
invite MVCA directors to a council
meeting for further discussion.

The Wingham Hospital Auxiliary held its annual rummage sale earlier this spring, which was
the perfect occasion to honour some of its longest-serving volunteers. The hospital gave back
to the volunteers by serving them a catered lunch that day. From left: Doris Caesar, Mary Lou
Bourne and Betty Foxton have all been volunteering with the auxiliary for over 30 years each;
they are among the most veteran of auxiliary volunteers. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
