Dockstader leads church service
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Mother’s Day
May 12, were Brenda Brooks, Rob
Mason and Marilyn Craig. Ushering
were Rob and Cole Mason and
David Onn. Marilyn Scott was
organist and Katie Dockstader, choir
director.
Katie Dockstader was in charge of
the Mother’s Day service and Rob
Mason and Kayden Mason ran the
Power Point. Katie welcomed
everyone to church and wished all
the mothers Happy Mother’s Day
and also she wished everyone Happy
Christian Family Day.
Kayden and Cole Mason lit the
Christ candle and the other candles
on the altar table. Katie invited
everyone to greet one another. The
first hymn sung was, “Let Us Build
A House” followed by the call to
worship repeated responsively and
the opening prayer repeated in
unison.
Katie had the three boys come to
the front for the storytime. She asked
them if they knew what today was
and the answers were yes. She then
asked them what they thought of
their mothers. Some of the answers
were kind, helpful loving and
awesome. Katie asked them who
else did they know who was like
their mothers. God is just like our
mothers. He cares for us and loves
us just like our mothers. The
congregation repeated the prayer
after Katie, thanking God for our
mothers.
The children’s hymn, “Would You
Bless Our Homes and Families”,
was sung. The scripture readings
were from John 10: 22-30 and the
23rd Psalm. The choir sang the
anthem, a version of the 23rd Psalm.
Katie’s message to the
congregation was “Like Mother,
Like Shepherd”. Our mothers
challenge us to be the best that we
can be. We want to celebrate all our
mothers for caring and loving us.
The list is long with all the things
our mothers do for us. The world is
filled with mothers who have
stepped up to the plate in many
things. Mothers are like the
shepherd, the sheep know the sound
of the shepherd’s voice the same as
children know the sound of their
mother’s voice. The sheep follow the
shepherd just like children follow
their mothers. When we stray,
God guides us back, just like
mothers do.
The next hymn, “The Lord is My
Shepherd”, was sung. The offering
was received followed by the
singing of the offertory response,
“Grant Us, God, the Grace,” the
offertory prayers the prayers for the
people and the singing of the Lord’s
Prayer. The last hymn, “Spirit, Open
My Heart”, was followed by the
commissioning and the benediction
and the singing of the response
“Amen.” Everyone was invited to
stay for coffee and treats.
